Hernandez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.

The utility man will head to the bench after he started in each of the past four games while going 5-for-18 with one home run, three doubles, two walks, five RBI and two runs in addition to picking up reps in center field and at third base and shortstop. He should be a mainstay in the lineup versus left-handers and will see occasional starts versus right-handed pitching.

Hernandez went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Guardians.

Hernandez doubled in his first at-bat before coming around to score on a Mookie Betts single, giving the Dodgers their first run of the game. The shortstop then chipped in an RBI double and a solo homer in his final two plate appearances, giving him his first long ball since Aug. 7. It was also just his third three-hit performance this season and his second since being acquired by Los Angeles. He's now batting .292 in August with two homers, 15 RBI and 11 runs scored and has driven in two runs in back-to-back games.

Hernandez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional run and a walk Monday in a 13-7 victory over San Diego.

EDGE Analysis

Hernandez went deep in the sixth inning, swatting a solo shot to left-center field. It was his first long ball since rejoining the Dodgers as a result of a July 25 trade with the Red Sox. Hernandez has played regularly since returning to the National League and hit well, slashing .324/.350/.541 with five doubles, Monday's homer, seven RBI, five runs and a 2:3 BB:K over 40 plate appearances.

Hernandez will start in left field and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Padres.

EDGE Analysis

Hernandez will stick in the lineup for the seventh straight game and will appear in his 10th contest overall since beginning his second stint with the Dodgers on July 26. He's managed a .286/.300/.393 slash line through his first nine games with the Dodgers, but don't expect Hernandez's playing time to remain quite as robust moving forward. Hernandez has mostly benefited from the Dodgers having encountered a lefty-heavy slate of late, with Sunday's game marking the fifth time in six contests that Los Angeles has opposed a southpaw starter. He's not expected to be a lineup regular versus right-handed pitching.

The Dodgers acquired Hernandez in a trade from the Red Sox on Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe hears that the Red Sox will receive two minor-league relievers in return. Jeff Passan of ESPN identifies them as Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman. Hernandez has posted an ugly .222/.279/.320 batting line in 323 plate appearances this season after also struggling at the dish in 2022, but he can play shortstop and second base, and the Dodgers need help at both spots. The 31-year-old seems likely to operate in a super-utility role, even covering some outfield, as he makes his return to Los Angeles. He played six seasons with the Dodgers between 2015-2020.

Hernandez will start at second base and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Mets, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

He'll be manning the keystone for the third time in four games and seems to have overtaken Christian Arroyo as the Red Sox's preferred option at the position. Considering that Hernandez has maintained a .143/.189/.143 slash line since the beginning of July, any hold he has on an everyday role is likely a tenuous one.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Hernandez has been playing "good shortstop" for the last month and is confident with him playing the position, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. "I can say with confidence that we've turned that page a month ago," Cora said Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

Hernandez's struggles have been well documented. He had 14 errors (12 throwing) and a minus-5 defensive runs saved over 470 innings prior to a start at shortstop Saturday. Cora said they spotted mechanical issues, which has been addressed, and has no issues using him going forward. Shortstop will be a rotation of sorts with Hernandez cycling in with Yu Chang, and potentially Pablo Reyes (abdomen) when he comes off the 10-day injured list.

Hernandez went 1-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 10-6 win over the Rangers.

Hernandez, who has struggled both offensively and defensively this season and hadn't played since July 2, had the big hit during during Boston's six-run rally in the seventh inning. His broken-bat blooper, with an exit velocity of 52.7 mph and expected batting average of .150, fell into left field to plate the tying and go-ahead runs. With the expected return of Yu Chang (wrist) this weekend, Hernandez's playing time will be spotty going forward.

Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Friday's 3-1 win over the White Sox.

Hernandez ended an 0-for-10 skid with his hit, which was one of just four knocks for the Red Sox. The versatile 31-year-old continues to split time between second base and center field, which allows him to be in the lineup regularly. He's at a .225/.287/.344 slash line with six home runs, three steals, 29 RBI, 34 runs scored and 11 doubles through 69 contests.

Hernandez will start at shortstop and bat ninth Tuesday against the Twins.

EDGE Analysis

After Hernandez was initially set to be on the bench again Tuesday night, he will replace Pablo Reyes (undisclosed) at shortstop after Reyes was a late scratch from the lineup. Hernandez has recorded at least one hit in eight out of his last 10 games, batting .263 with a homer, six RBI and six runs scored over that stretch.
