Covey stayed behind at the White Sox's training complex in Glendale (Ariz.) and threw 75 pitches, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Covey is building up endurance in preparation for an expected start Saturday. With news that Carlos Rodon (biceps) may not return until mid-May, Covey is in position to make five or six starts in place of Rodon. Of course it would take a bold fantasy player to activate a player with no experience above Double-A.

Covey officially earned a spot on the Opening Day roster Saturday and could be an option for a spot start while Carlos Rodon (biceps) is sidelined, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Rodon is dealing with busitis in his biceps, which could cost him a couple of turns in the rotation. With that, manager Rick Renteria will likely use Covey or Anthony Swarzak as spot starters early in the season. Covey has never pitched above Double-A and allowed 11 earned runs over 12.2 innings with the White Sox this spring.

Covey is expected to open the year in the White Sox's rotation, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Carlos Rodon (biceps) headed to the DL, the door is open for Covey to step for his major league debut during the first week of the regular season. He figures to start either April 8 or 9 against Minnesota. The Rule 5 pick has made just six starts above High-A, and the results this spring (7.82 ERA, 2.05 WHIP, 6:4 K:BB) suggest there will be growing pains for the 25-year-old right-hander.

Covey gave up a two-run home run in his only scheduled inning Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Covey is expected to make the roster and is still in the mix to fill in for starter Carlos Rodon who will miss at least one start due to a biceps injury. Anthony Swarzak, who allowed a run in two innings Wednesday, is the other candidate to start for Rodon.

Covey will start the White Sox's final Cactus League game Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Covey will get a chance to make a final impression on manager Rick Renteria and pitching coach Don Cooper after what was his best outing of the spring Saturday. If he fares well Wednesday, Covey could be the fill-in starter for Carlos Rodon.

Covey allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three in 3.2 scoreless innings against the Indians on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
Saturday's start had been scheduled for days, but it took on added significance in light of the news that Carlos Rodon (bicpes) would likely begin the regular season on the disabled list. Covey, a Rule 5 pick, is one of three starters being considered as temporary fill-in for Rodon. He entered Saturday's start having allowed seven runs on nine hits in his last 3.2 innings, but was much more aggressive in attacking hitters and produced his best outing of the spring. While encouraging, it was just one start and he threw only 44 pitches. If he's a serious candidate to fill in for Rodon, the White Sox will have Covey stay back in Arizona when the major league team breaks camp and have him make a start in a minor league game to build up his innings and pitch counts.

Covey was mentioned as one possible candidate to fill in for starter Carlos Rodon (biceps) who is expected to start the season on the disabled list, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
How the White Sox plan to replace Rodon depends on a second medical opinion due early next week. In the event that Rodon misses only a start or two, general manager Rick Hahn is unlikely to have one of the team's highly regarded pitching prospects make the Charlotte-Chicago-Charlotte shuttle. That leaves Covey, a Rule 5 pick from the Athletics, along with Tyler Danish and David Holmberg as possible replacements. Predictably, Covey, who has just six games of experience above the High-A level, has been knocked around this spring. He's allowed 10 runs on 16 hits and three walks while striking out just three in eight innings.

Covey allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two in 2.2 innings Saturday against Texas.
EDGE Analysis
The Rule 5 selection from Oakland got his second spring start while putative rotation member James Shields threw a simulated game in the backfields of Camelback Ranch. Covey's bid for a spot in the rotation is a longshot and certainly took a hit Saturday. He could emerge as a bullpen arm with a strong spring, but the 25-year-old who has not pitched above Double-A now sports a 6.43 ERA in seven spring innings.

Covey made his first start of spring Friday, needing just 16 pitches to get through two scoreless innings in Friday's game against San Diego.
EDGE Analysis
Covey was selected by the White Sox during the Rule 5 draft this past winter after the right-hander impressed watchers of the Arizona Fall League. The rebuilding White Sox are in a position to maintain a project like Covey, who throws a four-seamer, a sinker (his best offering), a curveball and a changeup. If the 25-year-old Covey is to make the roster, it would likely be as a reliever, presumably in low-leverage situations.

Covey (oblique) went 4-0 with a 4.74 ERA in six starts for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League.
EDGE Analysis
The Athletics exposed Covey to the Rule 5 draft, where he was selected by the White Sox. Chicago will have to maintain Covey on the major league roster this season, which may be a stretch for a right-handed starter with just 29 innings above High-A. But the rebuilding south-siders, who don't expect to contend this season, have the opportunity to carry a project like Covey.
