Covey's contract was purchased from Triple-A on Saturday and he will start Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Royals, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.
EDGE Analysis
He was outrighted off the 40-man roster this offseason, but the White Sox needed a spot starter, and he will get the call with a corresponding roster move to be determined. Covey has a shiny 2.95 ERA at Triple-A, but his 5.15 FIP and below-average 18 percent strikeout rate do a better job illustrating how good he has been. He should be avoided in most formats, and could be sent back to Triple-A after the twin bill.

The White Sox outrighted Covey to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.
EDGE Analysis
There was no corresponding transaction with the move, so the White Sox could just be earmarking a spot on the 40-man roster for one of their non-roster invitees. Regardless, Covey never had a realistic shot at breaking camp with the White Sox, as he was able to do last season almost solely on his status as a Rule 5 selection. The 26-year-old, who hadn't pitched above the Double-A level prior to last season, looked woefully overmatched during his time with the White Sox, submitting a 7.71 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 41:34 K:BB over 70 innings.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Covey will get opportunities during spring training to prove he belongs in the major league, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Covey, a Rule 5 draft pick last year, stayed with Chicago for the entire season, but his numbers suggest he's not yet ready for prime time. In 18 games -- 12 of them starts -- the right-hander finished 0-7 with a 7.78 ERA. That outcome is utterly predictable given that Covey entered 2017 with just six games of experience at Double-A. The organization no longer needs to harbor him on the major league roster, so we fully expect the White Sox to allow him to develop in the minors.

Covey gave up four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
While this wasn't a particularly strong performance, Covey at least allowed the White Sox to hang around, leaving the door open for a late-inning rally. Covey dropped all seven of his decisions this season and has posted the lowest K-BB% among the 262 major-league pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched in 2017. It's hard to imagine he will get another look in a big-league rotation.

Covey (0-7) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three batters through six innings to take the loss against Kansas City on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
After a stint pitching out of the bullpen, Covey has now started three consecutive games and allowed 12 runs through 15.1 innings. However, it's worth noting that the 26-year-old right was clearly better Saturday than he was in his previous two outings. Covey's 7.83 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 5.0 K/9 makes him a high-risk fantasy option for his next projected start against the Angels at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Covey (0-6) allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks across 3.2 innings while taking the loss Sunday against the Tigers. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
Covey constantly put men aboard and was scored upon at least once in all four innings in which he pitched. He threw just 51 percent of his pitches for strikes, tying the season high in free passes he set in his previous outing. Covey has been given the opportunity to contribute down the stretch, but he has allowed 19 runs over his last 19.1 innings to raise his ERA to an unsightly 8.18 for the year. He is scheduled to remain in the rotation for Saturday's start against the Royals.

Covey (0-5) allowed four runs on two hits and four walks across 5.2 innings while earning the loss Tuesday against the Royals. He recorded one strikeout.
EDGE Analysis
Covey struggled mightily in the first inning, loading the bases before allowing a one-out grand slam to Brandon Moss. He bounced back nicely thereafter and only allowed two more baserunners, but enough damage was done to sink him to a loss. Covey had come out of the bullpen in his previous six appearances, and while his line Tuesday is nothing special, his persistence should keep him in the rotation for Sunday's start against the Tigers.

Covey will start Tuesday's game against the Royals, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
The White Sox have been out of playoff contention for quite a while, so they'll use the final month of the season as a testing ground for some of their younger starting options. The 26-year-old Covey will probably need to perform well in the majority of his outings the rest of the way to warrant a lengthy look for a rotation role by the time next spring arrives. Covey's status as a Rule 5 pick is likely the only reason he's maintained a spot on the active roster when he hasn't been hurt this season, as his 8.08 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 49 innings certainly haven't helped him curry favor with the White Sox. Given those results, Covey seems more likely to do harm than good for fantasy owners in any starts he receives down the stretch, but the White Sox are nonetheless inclined to give him the chance to prove himself, as the pitcher he'll replace in the rotation, the 33-year-old Mike Pelfrey, doesn't factor into the organization's future plans.

Covey struck one over 1.1 scoreless innings of relief in Thursday's 9-8 loss to Texas.
EDGE Analysis
Covey was making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list earlier this week. He had been a starter for the White Sox prior to going on the disabled list with an oblique injury, but appears to be a long reliever now. That could change after Thursday's starter, Reynaldo Lopez, left the game with an injury. Covey could return to the rotation, although the White Sox have some young prospect arms that could benefit from some major-league innings over the final few weeks of the season.

Covey was activated from the 10-day disabled list Monday, MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The White Sox haven't officially announced their plans for Covey, but it's expected that the Rule 5 pick will work in long relief after previously making eight starts before landing on the disabled list in May with a strained oblique. While Covey pitched well during his five-game rehab assignment, the 8.12 ERA (7.87 FIP) he supplied in 37.2 innings with the White Sox prior to suffering the injury suggests he's probably not ready for a meaningful role in the big leagues.
