Chase Headley has left Padres camp in Arizona and returned to San Diego to see a hand specialist. That's probably not a good sign. Headley jammed his left thumb Sunday in a Cactus League game while trying to break up a double play. The Padres should provide an update by Tuesday morning on the 28-year-old third baseman.

Padres manager Bud Black said late Sunday that Chase Headley (thumb) might be out for Opening Day. Headley jammed his left thumb Sunday while trying to break up a double play in a Cactus League game. "We're going to have some studies done, X-rays and maybe some other scans," Black said Sunday night. "He's a very important player for us. "We're hoping for the best."

If USA advances to the final round of the World Baseball Classic, Chase Headley will take David Wright's (ribs) spot on the roster. Most speculated that it would either be Headley or David Freese, and with Headley already in California (and the final round being played in San Francisco), he's the obvious choice. "This has always been a dream to play for Team USA," Headley said. It's a shame Wright won't be able to shoot for sole possession of the WBC RBI record, but USA won't lose much at third base. Willie Bloomquist or Ben Zobrist will start at the hot corner in Friday's elimination game against Puerto Rico.

Chase Headley said he's not "on the same page" with the Padres regarding a contract extension and there are currently no plans to re-engage in talks. Headley wants to remain in San Diego "all things being equal," but extension talks didn't go well when they were first broached earlier this winter, and it doesn't sound like the two sides will be talking again anytime soon. "We talked about a long-term contract briefly at the start of these negotiations," said Headley. "It was a quick discussion. We weren't on the same page right from the start. This close to free agency, it has to be a good deal for us. You can't sacrifice what's fair." Headley, who is slated for free agency after the 2014 season, avoided arbitration with the Padres by agreeing to a $8.575 million deal on Wednesday.

Padres and 3B Chase Headley avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $8.575 million contract. Headley requested $10.3 million with the Padres countering at $7.075 million when figures were exchanged earlier this month. It's a well-earned raise for the 28-year-old third baseman, who finished fifth in the NL MVP voting in 2012 after hitting .286 with 31 home runs and 115 RBI. Headley also earned his first Gold Glove.

Chase Headley requested $10.3 million and was offered $7.075 million from the Padres when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday. That's a pretty big gulf between the two sides, so it will be interesting to see whether they can get something done before a hearing. Headley earned $3.475 million last season, but he's seeking a big raise after finishing fifth in the NL MVP balloting and winning the NL Gold Glove Award at third base.

Scott Miller of CBSSports.com reports that the Padres and Chase Headley had "very rough" talks about an extension earlier this year. Headley's name came up in trade speculation immediately following the news of Alex Rodriguez's hip surgery, but the Padres remain interested in locking him up for the long-term. However, since he's under contract for two more seasons, an extension will likely take a back seat while Padres general manager Josh Byrnes addresses more pressing matters. It's possible talks could pick back up in the spring.

A Padres official told Joel Sherman of the New York Post on Monday that Chase Headley will not be traded. Some have suggested -- in the wake of the news that Alex Rodriguez needs another hip surgery -- that the Yankees should pursue Headley. But the 28-year-old third baseman is still pretty cheap and has steadily developed into one of the best all-around players in the sport. The Friars have no reason to move him.

The Padres have exercised their club options for 2014 and 2015 on manager Bud Black. Black has an uninspiring 464-509 managerial record since joining the Padres before the start of the 2007 season, but the team's higher-ups believe in his philosophies and are prepared to build around him. Which is actually pretty refreshing in a sport with so much turnover. The 2013 season will be Black's seventh in San Diego.
