Hayes was designated for assignment Sunday, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. With Yan Gomes (knee) returning from the disabled list for Sunday's game against the Reds, the Indians had no use for keeping Hayes around as a third catcher. The 31-year-old went 5-for-32 (.156) during his stay with the Indians, and owns a lifetime line of .205/.250/.359. Expect any interest in Hayes from other clubs to be tempered.

Making his first start of the season, Hayes launched a solo home run off of John Danks. A career .208 hitter, the 31-year old Hayes hasn't had a very productive offensive career to date. He'll continue to back up Roberto Perez behind the dish with Yan Gomes sidelined.
