Zobrist (neck) said he expects to return to the lineup Monday or Tuesday, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

EDGE Analysis

Zobrist described his neck as "unmanageable" last week, but he's been able to get in some pregame workouts the last few days. Despite Zobrist's confidence, the Cubs are worried the issue might linger into the beginning of the regular season, which could open up some starts at second base for Javier Baez until Zobrist is fully healthy.

Zobrist (neck) remains out of the Cubs' Cactus League lineup Thursday for the second straight game, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

EDGE Analysis

While it's poor timing this close to the season for Zobrist to miss time, neither Chicago nor the media has sounded any alarms yet. The veteran remains day-to-day until a more extensive update is given.

Zobrist was scratched from Wednesday's spring league game due to stiffness in his neck, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

It's unclear how long the issue will keep Zobrist sidelined, so consider him day-to-day until the Cubs release more on his status.

Zobrist could be given more days off during spring training and the upcoming season, The Chicago Sun-Times reports.

EDGE Analysis

Zobrist played in 147 games for the Cubs last season, but he'll be turning 36 in May, so manager Joe Maddon said he'll look to find him more rest days in an effort to keep Zobrist fresh for another October run. Helping matters is the emergence of Javier Baez, who gives Chicago another very good option at second base. Expect Baez and Zobrist to platoon there this season, but Baez, who started at second in all 17 postseason games last fall, could end up taking the job full-time. That would push Zobrist into more of a super utility role.

Zobrist, who swung at just 35.5 percent of the pitches he saw in 2016, had the lowest swing percentage in the league, MLB Director of Baseball Research and Development Daren Willman reports.

EDGE Analysis

Zobrist was well below the league average of 46.6 percent. Not surprisingly, Zobrist turned this patient eye into an excellent 15.2 percent walk rate and 1.17 BB/K rate, as well as a .386 on-base percentage. These look like leadoff hitter numbers, and with Dexter Fowler no longer around, Zobrist stands a good chance of grabbing that role in 2017.

Zobrist is a top candidate to lead off for the Cubs this year, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Cubs are looking to replace Dexter Fowler's production atop the lineup, and Zobrist is a logical choice for the spot. He's led off before, and he was second on the team last year (behind Fowler) with a .386 on-base percentage. Kyle Schwarber is also in consideration to bat first, and it's possible that manager Joe Maddon simply mixes and matches who leads off. It will be interesting to see what Chicago's lineups look like in spring training.

Zobrist went 3-for-4 with a double, solo homer, two-run shot and three runs in Friday's 7-3 victory over the Reds.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran second baseman launched a 377-foot solo shot to right to open the scoring in the fifth and then brought home Anthony Rizzo in the eighth with a 380-foot blast to right to cap matters off for the Cubs offense. Zobrist has hit safely in five of his last seven games and driven in eight runs over that span as well. His 75 RBI represent his highest total in that category since he knocked in 91 with the Rays in 2011.

Zobrist is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Pirates.

EDGE Analysis

Zobrist will rest for the second time in four games with manager Joe Maddon looking to get his regulars plenty of rest in advance of the postseason. Munenori Kawasaki will get the start at second base in Zobrist's place.

Zobrist went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Cardinals.

EDGE Analysis

Zobrist led both sides with a trio of hits, including his 30th double of the season. He also scored a pair of runs, including what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth inning. The 35-year-old has tailed off following a strong first half, but he's still batting a solid .272/.385/.431 with 15 homers, 72 RBI and 90 runs.
