Phaneuf scored the Leafs' only goal in a 4-1 loss to Carolina on Thursday night. It was just his second goal of the season.

He fired a rocket from the left point; it went in just under the crossbar. He hadn't found twine in 19 games leading into Thursday, but he still has 17 points in 32 games. He's a worthy activation -- after all, he's on pace for more than 40 points. But the days of double-digit goals are long gone.

Phaneuf delivered two assists in Tuesday's win over Calgary.

He now has 15 points, but all but one are helpers. Still, he's targeting a mid-40s finish by way of points and there's definitely fantasy value in that ... no matter how much fans in Toronto hate the guy.

Phaneuf delivered two assists Tuesday in a win over the Stars. He five points -- all assists -- in his last six games.

Is he warming up? Maybe, maybe not. His game is no longer about scoring goals off booming shots -- he only has one snipe so far this season. But take a look at his plus-10 rating -- that category hasn't been that high since 2007-08. He delivers middling fantasy value in most formats, so use accordingly.

Phaneuf collected a power-play assist in Thursday's win over the Lightning.

Phaneuf has tallied assists in back-to-back games, bringing his point total up to 10 through 20 games. While not an elite fantasy defenseman, Phaneuf's combination of above-average scoring, huge PIM (4) and hit (58) totals, and a strong plus/minus (plus-7) have made him a good roster piece.

Phaneuf scored his first goal of the season in Tuesday's loss to Arizona. The goal came on the power play.

It just took 12 games to net that puppy. Phaneuf's game has morphed over the years and he's spending more time focusing on shutting down opponents than on scoring. Right now, he's on pace for about 35 points this season, although most will come with the man advantage. Right now, there's more value in the name than in the product.

Phaneuf and the Maple Leafs will not play Wednesday after their scheduled game against the Senators was postponed in light of the ongoing crisis in Ottawa, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

Multiple gunmen reportedly fired shots Wednesday morning in the downtown area of the Canadian capital, with one shooter dead and possibly one or more still at large. With several government buildings on lockdown, safety will understandably take greater precedence than proceeding with the game as scheduled. The NHL has yet to announce a make-up date for the postponed contest.

Phaneuf will move to the left side of the ice for the upcoming season, Mark Masters of TSN reports.

Given Phaneuf's standing as a left-handed puck handler, the move across the ice should actually prove beneficial for the veteran blueliner, whose defensive prowess has slipped as he's aged. In addition to transitioning to the left side, Phaneuf also figures to see more relief with the offseason additions of Roman Polak and Stephane Robidas, who should help preserve the 29-year-old for the rigors of an 82-game season. Even if Phaneuf notices a reduction in minutes, he should still offer 30-to-40 point potential to go along with a bevy of hits, blocks and penalty minutes.

There are rumors circulating that the Maple Leafs are trying hard to trade Dion Phaneuf and the eighth pick overall to the Panthers for the first pick overall.

Although that may be nothing more than wishful thinking on the Buds part. If they do manage to pull that off, the Leafs are expected to select Kingston center Sam Bennet with the pick. Stay tuned.

Toronto team president Brendan Shanahan has no plans to strip Dion Phaneuf of his captaincy.

"I don't know if it is a solution," said Shanahan. "I think it's a cop-out, to a certain degree an easy way out. Has it happened on some teams? Yes. Is it something I'm thinking about since I've been here? Ultimately this will be a group decision. But I can tell you it's not something I've contemplated. Just the opposite. I want to help enhance the player and leader that Dion is." Shanahan feels that Phaneuf was trying to be too many things at once during the season and his play suffered at times because of it. Despite the recent trade rumors, it sounds like the Leafs' new president wants to keep Phaneuf in the fold heading into next season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly shopping captain Dion Phaneuf to Western Conference teams, according to independent sources of Rogers Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos.

Phaneuf's seven-year, $49 million contract kicks in next season. The Leafs received some calls for their top blueliner during the year, so they know there is some interest in him. His leadership has come under question and it was reported that Toronto is looking to make roster changes during the off-season to shake up their team culture. If they were to find a trading partner, the Leafs would probably have to eat some salary to facilitate the deal.
