Washington superstar Alex Ovechkin has seven years left on a contract that will pay him $10 million annually beginning next season, but he finished this regular season out of the playoffs and with a dreadful minus-35 rating, third worst in the NHL.
That stat marked the latest flash point to debate whether the controversial winger should focus on becoming better on defense and whether the Capitals should make a split from the player who reinvigorated the area as a hockey market. For his part, Ovechkin said he won't request a trade - beginning July 1 a limited no-trade clause in his contract goes into effect allowing him to list up to 10 teams each year to whom he would accept one - and there's been no indication Capitals owner Ted Leonsis would entertain the idea of parting with the face of the franchise. When asked after the Caps concluded their season having missed the playoffs for the first time since 2006-07 whether he should eschew his offensive focus, Ovechkin rebuffed the notion, saying: "I get paid to score goals. I scored 50. You can't point [at] one guy in position, say he didn't do his job - look at everybody's numbers. Watch the video, and everybody have a bad year."

Alex Ovechkin wants to see Adam Oates behind the bench as coach of the Washington Capitals next season.
Ovechkin said 'yeah' when asked if he wanted Oates back as coach. "I trusted him and I still talk to him," Ovechkin said. "I don't know if somebody in this locker room feel bad about him, that's their mind. My mind is we're still good friends and if something happens I'm always going to ask his advice." Oates still has one season left on his contract so it will be an important decision for George McPhee and the Washington Capitals.

Washington Capitals right wing Alex Ovechkin has claimed his fourth career Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL's goal-scoring leader.
Ovechkin scored 51 goals to capture his second consecutive fourth goal-scoring title. He became the 11th player in NHL history to record five 50-goal seasons and just the fifth to do so in his first nine campaigns, following Mike Bossy (9 in 9), Wayne Gretzky (8), Guy Lafleur (6) and Brett Hull (5). Ovechkin, who finished 2013-14 ahead of Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry (43) and San Jose Sharks forward Joe Pavelski (41), also registered his third career four-goal game Dec. 10; scored his 400th goal Dec. 20, becoming the sixth-fastest player in NHL history (and seventh-youngest) to achieve the milestone (634 GP). He led the League with 24 power-play goals, a franchise record and the most by any player since Steven Stamkos scored an equal amount in 2009-10. Since entering the NHL at the beginning of the 2005-06 season, Ovechkin leads the League in goals (422), points (814), power-play goals (151) and game-winning goals (69).

In his final game of the 2013-14 season, Alex Ovechkin found a way to be a polarizing figure in a meaningless game for the Washington Capitals.
He didn't manage to collect a point, yet it was a fancy and thwarted shootout attempt that upset many. Either way, the Capitals lost 1-0 (S0) to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday and won't see the postseason in 2014.

Alex Ovechkin leads the NHL in goals with 48 but has the worst plus/minus in the league as well at minus-34.
Ovechkin was minus-two on Sunday to surpass Nail Yakupov of the Oilers who remains at minus-33. Ovechkin has gone 15 games without scoring an even strength goal but has seven power play goals in that stretch. His goals obviously really help you in fantasy pools but his plus/minus really kills your chances.

Alex Ovechkin has not scored at even strength in his last 14 games.
The good news is that Ovechkin has seven power play goals in that time span but the bad news is that Ovie is minus-15 in the 14 games and has not been a plus player in any game since the February 8th game, the last one before the Olympics. His poor production during even strength situations is really hurting his fantasy value.
