Alex Ovechkin is upbeat after the Capitals were able to sign defensemen Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen.

"That our team signed such guys [as Niskanen and Orpik] - that's a very strong move," Ovechkin said. "Orpik, for example, is a very physical defenseman. If he plays on your team - it's a positive for you. But the results will be at the end of the season, it hasn't even started yet. Who knows what other changes are coming to the team- maybe there will be a trade or something else." Not everything that happened for the Capitals this summer was a positive in Ovechkin's eyes. He had a close relationship with Mikhail Grabovski and he's said to see him go.

Coach Barry Trotz said that Alex Ovechkin will need less 'glide' in his game next season.

Trotz also said that Ovechkin will start the season on the right wing. "Alex has got a little too much glide maybe in his game," Trotz said. "He's trying to score too much, so he's getting not as much space actually. You remember Alex when he would get that speed and he's moving and he can do things with the puck. He can beat you with his skill, he can beat you with his size and speed and hold you off. When you're standing still you're really easy to cover. I was just talking to Alex and said we gotta get a little more space for you. Sometimes that's coming back [into the defensive zone] and getting the puck in a good position. Sometimes when you're standing still you think you're in a position where if I get the puck I'll score. But you're easier to cover and we talked about that. That's a process." Ovechkin seems to be interested in improving so look out for him next season.

New Washington coach Barry Trotz wants to develop a trusting relationship with Alex Ovechkin.

"It starts with the relationship," Trotz said. "I know I'm going to work at that, but it can't happen until I have a relationship with him, because there's no trust. To me, Alex has to trust that I'm giving him the best advice for the team, for him to grow his game. I don't know Alex as well. I know going against him, what he does well. But I need to know Alex the person." He wants to sit down with Ovechkin soon to go over how he wants the Capitals' captain to play and what role he'll have in the system. Trotz never had a 40-goal scorer in Nashville and former bench boss Adam Oates helped Ovechkin register an NHL-best 51 goals last season after he switched him to a right winger. Trotz is expected to try to assist Ovechkin in becoming better in his own end.

Alex Ovechkin skated with a brace on his knee during the quarterfinals of the World Hockey Championship.

"Of course it was a bit awkward to skate in the brace," said Ovechkin. "But I think I'll play without it the next game and everything will be okay. I wasn't risking anything, I knew the brace would protect me in case of a collision. That's what happened in the first period and I immediately knew that the leg is reacting well. I was about 90 percent ready. And I didn't take any pain killers at all." He didn't record a point in Russia's 3-0 win against France and was rested during the third period.

Former Winnipeg Jets forward Alex Burmistrov said the leg injury Alex Ovechkin suffered in Minsk Sunday is scary.

"Of course it's scary. We hope he's healthy and can play," said Burmistrov, a teammate of Ovechkin with Team Russia at the 2014 World Hockey Championship. Ovechkin received an open-ice hit from Marcus Kink of Team Germany. The hit appeared to make contact with the superstar's right knee. Ovechkin flipped over after the hit and remained on the ice for two minutes before needing to be helped off by teammates. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Ovechkin was injured in the third period of Russia's 3-0 victory and did not return. "I hope nothing is wrong with him. I hope he is fine. You never want to see that," said German goaltender Philipp Grubauer, who is also a teammate of Ovechkin with the Washington Capitals in the NHL. "We need him. He had 51 goals this year, he is one of the best players in the world so we need him up in Washington."
