Steve Ott has agreed to a two-year, $5.2 million contract extension with the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues acquired Ott from the Buffalo Sabres as part of the Ryan Miller trade. He's known primarily for his gritty play, but he does chip in offensively. He had 23 points and 92 penalty minutes in 82 games in 2013-14.

It was speculated prior to the start of free agency that Steve Ott might circle back to the Buffalo Sabres, but that appears to be far less likely now.

The Sabres have been busy during the free agent period thus far, while adding Brian Gionta, Matt Moulson, Josh Gorges and Andrej Meszaros. "I don't know if he's a possibility," said GM Tim Murray. "I certainly reflected on what we did and was very happy with what we did." Ott is still out there as an unrestricted free agent.

The St. Louis Blues would like to re-sign Steve Ott, but the negotiations have "gone quiet," according to GM Doug Armstrong.

That meshes with a recent report from Craig Custance. The Blues acquired Ott from the Buffalo Sabres as part of the Ryan Miller deal. "He's a really good sort of jack of all trades," Armstrong said. "He can go up and down in your lineup. Obviously I don't think there's any more expanded growth in Steve Ott's game - he is what he is. We want to do fair contracts, but we don't want to be anybody's retirement package."

There's nothing new to report on contract talks between Steve Ott and the St. Louis Blues.

It looks like he'll be available as an unrestricted free agent in July and Craig Custance of ESPN believes Ott could end up back with the Buffalo Sabres. Ott was the captain of the team before he was traded to the Blues as part of the Ryan Miller deal.

Steve Ott's tenure with the St. Louis Blues could be at an end.

"I don't know what my situation is. It's way too early to even think about that," he said. "I don't want to think about that. I'm still thinking I'm running for a Cup right now." He was acquired from Buffalo as part of the Ryan Miller deal and can become an unrestricted free agent in July. Ott didn't get a goal in 29 games, including the playoffs, with the Blues. He also had a minus-15 rating. Ott picked up three assists in the regular season and another two during the team's first-round playoff exit versus Chicago.

With T.J. Oshie out, St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock started Steve Ott on the top line with David Backes and Alex Steen.

It seemed to work out fine as the Blues defeated the Hawks in overtime and the Backes line was very effective. Look for Ott to continue to play alongside Backes and Steen until Oshie returns.

Steve Ott and the Blues were shut out by the Stars on Friday night, losing for the fifth straight game and essentially losing their grip on the Central Division.

The Blues will need to beat the Red Wings on Sunday and the Avalanche to lose their final to games to have any shot at the division title. Steve Ott has struggled significantly since the trade from Buffalo, as the feisty 31 year old has just three assists and is a -12 in 22 games with his new club.

Steve Ott is excited to play against his former Buffalo teammates on Thursday night.

"I'm looking forward to it a lot, but I'm trying to take it like any game where you have friends out there," Ott said. "I'm just going to be myself and I expect them to be the same. There's no friends on the ice, but what's said and done on the ice stays there and gets forgotten pretty quick. I'm going to play hard against them and expect them to play hard at me. You owe that to the league." Ex-Sabres netminder Ryan Miller will be on the bench for the match and Brian Elliott will start instead. Ott was the captain for Buffalo before he was shipped to St. Louis, along with Miller, just before the trade deadline.

Steve Ott will once again play alongisde Derek Roy, with whom he played briefly in Buffalo.

The Blues' forward lines will remain the same as they have for the past three games that has produced three victories. Alexander Steen will skate on the first unit alongside David Backes and T.J. Oshie, while Jaden Schwartz, Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Tarasenko will form the second line. Derek Roy will skate between Ott and Brenden Morrow, while Magnus Paajarvi, Maxim Lapierre and Ryan Reaves will be the fourth unit. Despite playing very well this past week, Paajarvi's spot is going to be threatened when Vladimir Sobotka returns from injury in the next 10 days.
