After a 2016-17 campaign that saw him post just three goals and four assists in 53 games, Ott has decided to end his playing days and turn his attention to patrolling the back of the St. Louis bench. The 34-year-old ends his NHL career with 109 goals and 179 assists after suiting up for 848 games, but he will mostly be remembered for his physical play, for which he accrued 1555 penalty minutes.

Ott had an assist and seven hits over 11:29 of ice time in Montreal's 4-1 win over the Rangers on Saturday.

Ott made his debut for the Canadiens and had an immediate impact while centering the fourth line. He won an offensive-zone faceoff to set up the Habs' first goal and delivered a team-high in hits. Collectively, Ott, Torrey Mitchell and Andreas Martinsen gave Montreal its best performance in quite a while from a fourth-line. Going forward, Ott should be in the active lineup most nights, delivering in the more physical categories like hits and PIM.

Ott will play his first game with the Canadiens on Saturday against the Rangers.

Ott spent the 42 games with the Red Wings before being traded to Montreal, where he recorded three goals and three assists. The 34-year-old center can prove fantasy valuable in leagues that value physical performance, though, as Ott has recorded 101 hits and 63 PIM this season.

The Canadiens acquired Ott from the Red Wings Tuesday in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick in 2018.

EDGE Analysis

The acquisition of the 34-year-old Ott gives the Habs some grit. Ott is mostly known for being an irritant whom the club likely plans to use in the postseason to get under the skin of opponents. Fantasy owners in deeper pools like Ott for his fairly frequent trips to the sin bin (63 PIM) and hits (101) through 42 games.

Ott contributed a goal, an assist and a plus-2 rating in Sunday's win over the Penguins.

EDGE Analysis

Ott's first-period goal came on the same shift as a crushing hit on Kris Letang, showing the combination of physicality and skill he was supposed to bring to Detroit. Unfortunately, the latter has been severely lacking, as the former 22-goal scorer has lit the lamp just three times while skating in a bottom-six role.

Ott (shoulder) is likely to be scratched from Tuesday's home tilt with the Blue Jackets, despite his recent activation from injured reserve, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.

EDGE Analysis

It appears that the Red Wings will ease the agitator in the lineup. In a move that has little impact on the fantasy community, Tomas Jurco figures to man the left wing on the fourth line in Ott's stead.

That said, he has tallied 80 hits and 56 PIM in 37 games, so in leagues that reward those categories, he is better off.

Ott is dealing with a shoulder injury that will see him go on injured reserve, MLive.com reports.

The gritty Ott's placement on IR will clear a roster spot for Darren Helm, who is close to returning from a shoulder injury of his own. Ott's recorded 56 PIM and 80 hits in 37 games, but unless your fantasy league hands out tons of points for the rough stuff, he won't be worth retaining through this injury.

Ott has hit the scoresheet just once in the last 18 games, giving him four points in 37 contests this season.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran agitator does have 28 PIM and 41 hits during that span, but hasn't been good for much else while averaging 10:45 of ice time per game. Ott used to be good for 35-40 points and triple-digit PIM in the prime of his career with Dallas, but doesn't make much of a fantasy impact these days in a depth role in Motown.

Ott scored his first goal of the season Thursday night, contributing to a 3-1 home win over the Canucks.

EDGE Analysis

You know it's a good night when Ott finds a way to light the lamp. The gritty veteran entered the game with 21 goals between the past four seasons, but he was able to get his stick on a Jonathan Ericsson shot for a deflected tally. Unless your fantasy league has a heavy weight on penalty minutes -- Ott has 17 of those -- it's safe to pass over him.
