Jake Allen's tenure in the AHL came to an end when the Chicago Wolves were eliminated from the playoffs last week.

"I've worked hard and had some bumps and bruises, but I think I proved myself this year," said Allen, who has a one-way contract next season and is expected to stay with the Blues. "I know I'm ready for that next step. I know it's going to be a challenge. I'm really looking forward to (training camp in) September." Allen didn't have a good series against the Toronto Marlies in the second round of the AHL postseason, but his 33 wins, 2.03 goals-against average, .928 save percentage and seven shutouts in 52 games this past campaign led all netminders during the regular season. If the Blues retain Ryan Miller then Allen will back him up in 2014-15. If St. Louis re-signs Brian Elliott and Miller walks then Allen could end up competing for starts.

Blues GM Doug Armstrong said Jake Allen will play in St. Louis next season.

Allen is expected to start the season as the Blues' backup goaltender. The question is who the starter will be. Despite his solid, but less than ideal performance in the playoffs, the Blues are likely to attempt to re-sign Ryan Miller. Brian Elliott's tenure might be over with the Blues though as he was unable to establish himself as the team's starter despite some strong numbers as the number two guy.

The St. Louis Blues demoted Jake Allen back to the AHL. He's been up and down lately but hasn't played in the NHL this season.

This is a clear sign that Jaroslav Halak is healthy enough to at least dress. Brian Elliott has been lights-out lately, so it will be interesting to see how St. Louis proceeds here. Allen isn't a big fantasy factor this season, but that can change once the logjam clears up.

Jake Allen will probably start the 2013-14 campaign in the AHL.

The Blues don't plan to carry three goaltenders like they did for part of last season. "I just think he's got to continue to improve," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "I think he's a guy we see daily improvement, weekly improvement, he's a young guy that's learning how to play. He's in the unique position where he probably got games ahead of the curve through necessity last year and took advantage of it. Now everybody is excited." Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott will enter the season as St. Louis' keepers, but Allen does have some value in keeper leagues.

Jake Allen knows he's heading into training camp in a difficult position.

Allen stepped up with a 2.46 GAA and .905 save percentage in 15 games last season as a rookie, but he's far from a lock to make the 2013-14 squad. "It's a situation where we still have (Elliott) and (Halak) up there on one-way deals, so it's a bit of a different situation for me," Allen said. "Obviously you want to be there, but you have to keep things in perspective and bide your time. I had a good season last year, but that's just a step. I think I still have to prove myself in camp." Allen's newly signed two-year deal is a two-way contract next season and will turn into a one-way deal in 2014-15. Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak's contracts are both set to expire in the summer of 2014, so it would make sense if Allen spent the 2013-14 campaign in the minors and then the Blues re-signed one of Elliott and Halak to play alongside Allen in 2014-15. That being said, there's still a chance that all three netminders could make the Blues' team out of training camp.
