Matt Martin netted his first goal of the 2013-14 campaign on Tuesday.
Martin typically doesn't do a lot offensively and that's not likely to change this season. What he's known for is his physical presence. Martin led the league with 234 hits last season and has already been credited with another 24 in six contests in 2013-14.

Matt Martin leads the NHL in hits with 216.
Bet that wasn't your first guess as to who is the top body checker in the league. Martin is therefor very valuable in pools that count hits as a category. Of course if you are in such a pool, you probably knew that already.

Matt Martin scored the game-winning goal for the Islanders as they defeated the Lightning 4-2 on Saturday night.
We highlight him not only because of the game winner but because it's not often the penalty-minute/fighting machine (54 penalty minutes) finds the twine (number two on the year), and Saturday night, he did it to keep the Islanders in a playoff position. Martin also had eight hits in the game. Michael Grabner, Josh Bailey, who also had an assist, and Andy MacDonald (empty-netter) potted the other markers.

Matt Martin notched a goal and an assist for the Islanders in a 6-3 win over Montreal Tuesday night.
The NHL's hit leader from 2011-12 was also credited with six hits in the match. Martin has only three points in 23 games this campaign. Colin McDonald had a goal and an assist in the contest, while the usual suspects of John Tavares and Matt Moulson also scored a goal each in the win. Tavares also had an assist.

Matt Martin had 10 penalty minutes in the Islanders' 7-0 loss on Monday.
As you can probably guess based on the score, Martin was about the only Islanders' player worth starting in fantasy leagues this afternoon. He participated in two fights, one against the Flyers' Wayne Simmonds and another versus Braydon Coburn.

Matt Martin enjoyed a strong game for the Islanders on Monday afternoon.
He posted a goal, two shots, seven penalty minutes and was credited with one hit in the team's 4-3 win over Tampa Bay. Martin dropped the gloves with B.J. Crombeen one second into the first period. At the same time, Islanders defenseman Joe Finley fought with Tampa's Pierre-Cedric Labrie. Martin led the league in hits last year and he does rack up PIMs as well, so he can be beneficial to a fantasy team if your league promotes rough play.

Matt Martin isn't angry at Islanders owner Charles Wang over this lockout.
"I can't speak for all my teammates, but I don't think there's any ill will toward Charles or Garth [Snow, the Islanders' GM]," Martin said. "There could be some guys around the league who'll feel differently, I would imagine, given the negotiations and the contracts that were signed. But I think our guys know this is a business, and when it's time, our job is to play hockey. That's what we want to do." Wang hasn't been one of the more openly active owners during this lockout. Players on teams like Boston might feel a bit more awkward immediately following the lockout because Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs is seen as one of the more actively hardline owners, but even then, the players are likely to put that behind them once they have a CBA and play hard for their team.

Matt Martin leads the NHL with a whopping 349 credited hits this season.
"To lead the league in anything is kind of a big accomplishment," Martin said. "I just try to play the same way every night, just finish all my checks when I can." The statistical category varies from arena to arena and it has been known to be inaccurate at times, but it gives Martin some additional fantasy value to go along with his 109 penalty minutes and 14 points.
