Lombardi was placed on unconditional waivers Friday for the purpose of his release, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

After failing to win a roster spot with the Rangers in training camp, Lombardi refused his assignment to AHL Hartford and is electing to pursue free agency. It's highly likely he'll head back to Switzerland, where he shined for Geneve Servette during the 2013-14 campaign.

The Rangers waived Lombardi on Sunday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

Lombardi spent last season in the Swiss-A league where he scored 20 goals and 30 assists in 46 games. If he is not claimed he will report to AHL Hartford. The Rangers are already thin at center so if there are anymore injuries at the position, Lombardi could see some time with New York. Otherwise, he won't have a big fantasy impact this year.

Lombardi (groin) took part in Thursday's practice, Newsday's Steve Zipay reports.

Lombardi has been held out since injuring his groin Sunday, but it appears he is feeling good enough to return to practice, and the setback should not prevent him from being ready for Opening Night.

Lombardi suffered a groin injury at Sunday's practice and won't be available for at least the next two preseason games, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.

The Rangers were already in a bind at center with Derek Stepan likely out until late-October with a fractured fibula, and Lombardi's injury will only further test the team's depth. Lombardi wasn't having an especially strong training camp, and the injury could effectively take him out of the running to fill the opening in the top six. Opportunity knocks for young forwards Oscar Lindberg, J.T. Miller and Kevin Hayes.

Matthew Lombardi has signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract with the New York Rangers.

Lombardi had 20 goals and 50 points in 46 Swiss league games last season. He's a veteran of 536 NHL games and will provide the Rangers with some secondary scoring. It's certainly not a bad signing given the cost.

Matthew Lombardi is unlikely to return after not playing in the Anaheim Ducks' opening-round series against the Detroit Red Wings.

Lombardi was a trade-deadline acquisition but was edged out of the lineup by some of Anaheim's younger players. The veteran pivot didn't register a point in seven games with the Ducks and finished the season with four goals and eight points in 28 games.

Matthew Lombardi thinks highly of the Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks acquired him from the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday. "We have the veteran guys and guys who have won a Stanley Cup and who have been there before and then you have the young talent so it seems like a great mix," Lombardi said. He has four goals and eight points in 21 games this season.

Matthew Lombardi was a healthy scratch on Monday.

After starting the season with two goals and six points in 10 games, Lombardi has not had a point in his last seven games and as a result was not in the lineup Monday. He is not worth a spot on your fantasy roster.
