Eric Belanger has announced his retirement from hockey. Belanger had his contract bought out by the Edmonton Oilers in the off-season and then signed a deal with Yekaterinburg of the KHL. But after going pointless in seven games, the 35-year-old decided enough was enough and has retired.

Eric Belanger has signed a one-year contract with KHL Yekaterinburg. Belanger became an unrestricted free agent after the Edmonton Oilers bought out the final campaign of his old contract. He had three points and 10 penalty minutes in 26 games last season.

Edmonton has put Eric Belanger on unconditional waivers with the purpose of buying out the remainder of his contract. He has one year left on his contract and was set to earn $1.25 million next season. Belanger's buyout will erase his $1.75 million cap hit from the Oilers salary cap. The veteran center didn't score a goal and had only three assists in 26 appearances last campaign.

"I'm not going to lie, there's a little bit of worry about it but I'm feeling pretty good," Belanger said. "I've been skating for over a week and it's been feeling okay. I'm crossing my fingers but if I can go through a game, hopefully I can finish the year strong."
