Dmitry Kulikov D FLA 1 Month

Dmitry Kulikov has signed a three-year, $13 million contract extension with the Florida Panthers.

Kulikov was a restricted free agent after completing his two-year, $5 million deal. He had 19 points and 66 penalty minutes in 81 games last season. The Panthers were one of the worst teams offensively last season and while they won't be great in 2014-15, they should at least approach the level of mediocrity and that will help Kulikov reach the 25-point mark for the third time in his career.

Florida GM Dale Tallon has liked what he's seen from Dmitry Kulikov after the young defenseman had a difficult start to the 2013-14 campaign.

"He's been solid all the way around," Tallon said. "He's buying in, so I'm happy for him." Kulikov, who will become a restricted free agent this summer, has six goals, 12 points and a minus-11 rating in 57 games this season.

Dmitry Kulikov vehemently denied a rumor that he wants to leave the NHL and play hockey in Russia.

"I would like to face those people saying those things and ask them where they are getting their information," said Kulikov. "Wanting to go back to Russia? Those words have never come out of my mouth. I think the people starting that are just trying to create more drama for the league or whatever. ... I want to help turn things around here. I want to win here. The year we made the playoffs was like the best thing ever. It's a totally different feeling. I want to feel that again." He played with the KHL's Yaroslavl Locomotiv franchise during the lockout last year and he enjoyed the experience, but he feels it was enough to satisfy him. The 23-year-old defenseman had a rough start to the 2013-14 season, but he has been playing better of late. He has recorded four goals and one assist in his past eight games.

Dmitry Kulikov netted his sixth goal of the season in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Toronto.

Kulikov has had himself a nice month of January, as he has racked up four goals, but still isn't worthy of roster considerate in all but the deepest of leagues. Nick Bjugstad and Sean Bergenheim also scored goals for Florida in the loss.

Dmitry Kulikov's goal Tuesday night ended a 0-for-43 drought for the brutal Panthers' power play.

"It's just the beginning. We can't just hope we scored one goal and now we'll score one every game," Kulikov said. "We have to build on that." Florida owns the league's worst power play with a 9.2 percent success rate on 173 opportunities.

Dmitry Kulikov scored for the Panthers on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough in their 3-2 loss to the Hurricanes.

Kulikov will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and his inconsistent play has fired up the trade rumors. The 23-year-old offers a lot of promise as a puck-moving blueliner, though his three goals and eight points don't exactly reveal that. Marcel Goc also scored in the loss.

Florida coach Peter Horachek has liked what he's seen from Dmitry Kulikov recently.

He was sent to the press box earlier this month and Horachek feels like the young defenseman has responded. "Sometimes it's what players need, a little bit of adversity and to understand, and to sit back and watch a little bit," Horachek said. "Most players go through it. He doesn't like it, most players don't. I think he's played his best hockey coming out of there. He's making better decisions; he's competing really hard and playing the game against top players. His minutes have gone up because of it." Kulikov doesn't feel like he's doing anything differently aside from cutting down on his turnovers. He has six points and a minus-7 rating in 37 games this year.

Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon denied a recent report that Dmitry Kulikov was a healthy scratch on Tuesday to accommodate a trade that ended up falling apart.

"No, we sat him because of his play," Tallon said. "[Kulikov] needed a little refresher. I've liked the way he's played since." Kulikov has four points and 35 penalty minutes in 29 games this season.
