Anze Kopitar hopes that the NHL participates in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
"I hope we can. It happens every four years," Kopitar said. "Yeah, the schedule is a little bit compressed and the travel's not the greatest, but I think the NHL and the PA did a fantastic job of organizing everything - even accommodations for the families and for the family members and everybody. I guess I do hope we're going to play again." Kopitar represented Slovenia in the 2014 Games and led them to the quarterfinals. It was always expected that the NHL would play in Sochi because denying the Russian-born players an opportunity to represent their country at home would have been a tough pill for them to swallow. There are presently no NHL players from South Korea though, where the games will be played next. Between the timezone issues, the number of significant injuries that occurred in the 2014 tournament, and the fact that the NHL is looking at reviving the World Cup, it would frankly be surprising if the NHL participated in the 2018 Olympics.

Anze Koptiar scored one of Slovenia's three-third period goals in a stunning 3-1 upset win over Slovakia in a Group A game Saturday in Sochi.
With the game scoreless entering the third, the Solvenians scored three times including a highlight-reel goal by Kopitar which iced the game at the 9:22 mark. Roc Ticar and captain Tomas Razingar scored Slovenia's other goals. It was quite the accomplishment for this tiny country with only one NHL player on its roster and needless to say, Kopitar, who is that payer, was thrilled with the outcome. "I sure hope they are not going to mix us up with Slovakia anymore like everybody does," said Kopitar. "We've waited for this for a long time, we have believed in this for a long, long time." Prior to Saturday's upset, Slovenia had lost to Slovakia in all eight Olympic meetings by a goal differential of 25. Slovenia plays the U.S. on Sunday.

Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings is the only member of an NHL team who will play in the coming Olympics for Team Slovenia.
Most of Slovenia's players come from European leagues; forward Jan Mursak played a bit for the Detroit Red Wings before leaving to play for CSKA Moscow of Russia's KHL. Slovenia is in a tough group with host Russia, Slovakia and the United States. Matjaz Kopitar, Anze's father, is Team Slovenia's head coach, and he is realistic about his squad's chances. "We play the first three games against the teams where Olympic medals mean something. They already had Olympic medals and we are big underdogs," the senior Kopitar said. "But that doesn't mean that we're not going to compete hard. That's the way we play. If you are not skilled enough, you need to find another way how to compete against these teams. My biggest wish is just to be a competitive team and try our best."
