Arguing that Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews' matching eight-year, $84 million extensions aren't excessive, agent Pat Brisson claimed that they could have gotten $13.8 million annually if they so desired.

That's probably true, because the Chicago Blackhawks were negotiating from a weak position. Kane and Toews have restored credibility to the Blackhawks and the team was in a position where they were basically going to cave into whatever demands the duo made. However, Brisson used that as an argument to suggest that Kane and Toews gave Chicago a hometown discount in an effort to keep their team together, which is pushing it. Kane and Toews chose to make themselves the two highest paid players in terms of cap hit by a significant margin so while they probably could have gotten even more, their demands were still high enough to hurt Chicago's competitive edge. That said, they were under no obligation to make life easy on the Blackhawks in the first place. After all, they've been successful and it's their right to cash in.

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Patrick Kane to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension.

Jonathan Toews signed an identical contract. Kane and Toews new cap hits of $10.5 million annually don't take effect until the 2015-16 campaign, but currently they're projected to be the two highest in the league. Kane has emerged as a point-per-game player and a clutch performer in the playoffs, although his recent injury history makes him a bit of a risk going forward.

Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews aren't expected to re-sign with the Chicago Blackhawks until after the July 4 holiday weekend.

They were initially expected to sign on July 1, but it's way too early to be concerned. The only question is how high their combined cap hits will be. They have a lot of bargaining power in their negotiations, but the more they demand, the harder it will be for the Blackhawks to continue to compete for the Stanley Cup.

The negotiations between the Chicago Blackhawks and stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are ongoing.

July 1 was the first day Chicago was eligible to sign Toews and Kane to contract extensions. They won't become unrestricted free agents for another year, but the Blackhawks don't want to enter the 2014-15 campaign with their future being unknown. "Nothing has changed from my original expectation that they're both going to be signed," Chicago GM Stan Bowman said. "We're looking forward to that."

Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews might not sign on July 1 after all.

Kane and Toews will almost certainly re-sign with Chicago anyways, but this could be an indication that the duo is demanding more than the Blackhawks are comfortable with. If that's the case then Chicago could run into problems continuing to build a Stanley Cup-caliber team around them once they do sign.

Look for Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews to be signed on July 1.

Kane and Toews weren't eligible to be signed prior to that, but if Tuesday ends without them inking an extension, it would be surprising. The only question is how much their extensions will cost the Blackhawks as the more they asked for, the harder it will be for Chicago to stay competitive in the years to come.

Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman wants to have Patrick Kane signed on July 1.

Kane has already made it clear that he'd like to re-sign with Chicago and the two sides shouldn't have trouble meeting that target date. The only real question is how much Kane will get as it will obviously have an impact on how much space the Blackhawks have for the team's supporting cast.

Patrick Kane would gladly welcome signing a contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks.

That should come as no surprise. Kane and Jonathan Toews have one year left on their respective contract and the Blackhawks have made signing them to extensions their top off-season priority. "I know we both love it here in Chicago, love playing here and having the chance to win every year," said Kane. Agent Pat Brisson represents both players and Chicago GM Stan Bowman is excited to start the negotiation process.

Patrick Kane picked up two assists in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final on Sunday.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he set an NHL record with nine points (two goals, seven assists) in the series while facing elimination. Kane surpassed the previous record held by Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux, who earned eight points (three goals, five assists) in Games 5, 6 and 7, in 1992 against the Washington Capitals with the Penguins down 3-1 in the series.

Chicago owns a 12-2 record in Games 6 or 7 during the careers of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.

Kane has been very productive over that span with nine goals and 17 points. "You try to take it upon yourself to try and step up in big situations," he said. "But we have a lot of guys that do that. I think with our team and the amount of great players that are on it, it seems like everyone has their time to step up and have the spotlight and be in that moment. There's been numerous guys that have done it. When it's your turn, it's always fun to contribute." The Blackhawks have won an impressive 25 of 29 games after Game 4 in a series with Kane and Toews on the roster.
