Matt Hunwick D NYR 6 Days

Hunwick served as a healthy scratch in the team's 4-3 overtime victory over Pittsburgh on Monday.

After the 29-year-old saw his ice time dip under 12 minutes last Saturday against the Red Wings and a trip to the press box on Monday, it appears John Moore has the upper-hand on the team's depth chart as they head on a four game road trip. While Hunwick (seven assists in 23 games) has certainly out-produced Moore when given the chance, Moore (three assists in 19 games) is seemingly favored in the battle for the team's sixth defenseman, at least for now.

Hunwick registered an assist in Monday's 4-3 loss the Blues.

Hunwick, who started the evening paired with bruiser Dylan McIlrath, is managing to piece some points together. The former seventh round pick (Boston, 2004) has collected all three of his season total three points in the last three games. While we can't guarantee it will continue, he's likely to continue getting time on the power play, where tallied Monday's assist to help open the scoring.

Hunwick tallied two assists in Monday's 5-4 win over the Wild.

Though Mike Kostka received the first crack at claiming a regular role on defense in the wake of Dan Boyle's move to IR earlier this month due to a broken hand, Hunwick has since solidified himself on the Rangers' third pairing. The two points Monday were the first Hunwick has scored in his seven games, and it wouldn't seem likely that he'll get much of an opportunity to contribute offensively. Instead, the team will count on Hunwick simply to play mistake-free hockey in his own zone.

Matt Hunwick has been placed on waivers.

Ryan Wilson (knee) is close to being able to return to the Avalanche lineup, but the team needed to make a move in preparation for activating him off of the injured reserve list. It looks like Hunwick is the odd man out. He comes with a $1.6 million annual cap hit in 2013-14 before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Matt Hunwick cleared waivers Wednesday and remains a member of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Avs were hoping someone would take a flier on Hunwick so they could delve into the free-agent market. The 28-year old had six assists in 43 games last season. Barring a trade, he'll likely remain a depth defender for Colorado.

Colorado Avalanche place Matt Hunwick on waivers.

It will be interesting to see if any team puts in a claim on Hunwick. The 28-year-old defenseman had six assists and a plus-4 rating in 43 regular-season games this season. He's not much of a fantasy value, but Hunwick could be a solid depth defenseman for some team.
