Howard (groin) was placed on injured reserve by the Red Wings on Sunday.

Howard was forced out of Saturday's game on a stretcher due to the injury, and will now head to injured reserve for the second time in less than a month because of the groin issue. The Red Wings recalled Tom McCollum from AHL Grand Rapids to take his place on the roster.

Howard (groin) will undergo an MRI on Sunday to assess the extent of his injury, according to a report on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada. He could be out for a long period of time.

The injury happened when he tried to recover after misplaying the puck behind the net. He dove out front and tried to make a save, kicking his left leg out in an awkward split position. He immediately fell forward and barely moved from his belly until a stretcher arrived; he even kept his mask on as he was wheeled off. This looks like it could be a long absence for Howard, who had just returned the IR (groin) on Dec. 27. Reserve him immediately. And pray.

Howard was taken off the ice on a stretcher after suffering a groin injury during the first period of Saturday's game against the Capitals, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Howard, who missed time at the end December with a groin injury, went down just minutes into the game and was unable to leave the ice under his own power. The Red Wings announced that Howard was being tended to by doctors in the visitors' locker room at the Verizon Center. If Howard were to miss additional time, top backup Petr Mrazek and Jonas Gustavsson would be left to handle netminding duties for Detroit.

Howard will receive the start in goal Saturday against the Capitals, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.

After receiving a rest in the Wings' last game Wednesday in favor of Petr Mrazek, Howard will return to the crease in search of his 17th win of the season. Howard has been on point since the start of December, surrendering two or fewer goals in all but one of his last 10 starts.

Howard turned aside 21 of 23 shots and benefited from some late offense in Tuesday's 4-2 win over Edmonton.

This one looked like it was headed to overtime until Pavel Datsyuk untied it on the power play with 34 seconds to go. So it didn't come as easy as you'd like to see against the lowly Oil, but it's still Howard's 10th start in the last 11 in which he's allowed two or fewer goals. Sharp. He'll take a seat Wednesday, though, as Petr Mrazek will start against Calgary in the second of a back-to-back set.

Howard will be making his 31st appearance in net against Edmonton on Tuesday. He'll head into the matchup with an impressive save percentage of .921 but will give way to Petr Mrazek on the final leg of the back-to-back Wednesday to rest.

Howard stopped 20 of 22 shots in Saturday's loss to the Canucks.

Howard has been playing very well of late, posting a 2-2-0 record in his last four games, stopping 103 of 111 shots in that span (.920 save percentage). With a 15-7-7 record, to go with an impressive .921 save percentage and 2.08 GAA, Howard has been one of the better fantasy netminders this season. Considering he's played in 30 of Detroit's 39 games this season and has been very consistent, the 30-year-old should be in your lineup every night he gets the nod.

Howard will start in net Saturday against the Canucks, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Howard faced just 13 shots against the Devils on Wednesday en route to his 15th win of the season. He will face a tougher opponent in Vancouver on Saturday, but the netminder will look to continue in his performance of late, allowing more than two goals just twice in his last ten outings.

Howard needed to make only 12 saves in a 3-1 victory against New Jersey on Wednesday.

The Red Wings' defense combined with a banged-up New Jersey team made for an easy night for Howard. The netminder allowed more than two goals just twice in 10 games in September and has been one of the better goalies in the NHL this season.

Howard will start Wednesday's game against the Devils, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Howard picked up the win in just one of his last six starts, but the blame should not fall on his shoulders considering he gave up just 10 total goals over that span, including four in one game. He will take on a New Jersey team Wednesday that won its last time out but has done so just four times since Nov. 21.
