Howard made 23 saves in a 3-2 loss to the Ducks on Saturday night.

The winner was a heartbreaker -- it came on a tough backhander by Ryan Getzlaf with just 24 seconds remaining. Backhanders are the hardest shot to deal with because you can't read where they're headed, so Howard can certainly be excused for that goal. Continue to deploy him as you always have.

Howard will get the start in net Saturday against Anaheim, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.

No surprise here, as Howard played well in a 2-1 win Thursday against Boston. Detroit has to play a second straight Cup contender, but Howard has looked great so far and seems to be a safe fantasy play.

Howard saved 16 of 17 shots in Thursday's season-opening 2-1 win over the Bruins.

Howard and the Wings may have benefited a bit from playing a Bruins team that had opened its season the night before with a win against Philadelphia, but hey, it's a good start for the 30-year-old netminder, who's coming off a season in which he posted his worst GAA and save percentage in three years.

Howard will be in the crease for Thursday's opener against the Bruins, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.

Howard made three appearances in goal during the preseason, going 2-1-0 with a 1.90 GAA while stopping 82 of 87 shots. The 30-year-old will enter this season with a lot to prove, after his numbers tailed off across the board in 2013-14.

Howard saved 31 shots but fell to the Penguins 2-0 in preseason action Wednesday.

The Red Wings will rise or fall on the shoulders of Howard this season, as the pressure mounts to prove last season was an aberration. Howard let up a bad rebound on one of the goals but played well for the most part. He is the unequivocal starter to begin the year but it remains to be seen what kind of leash he will be on should he struggle out of the gates.

Howard said that he's feeling his healthiest in "two or three years" prior to training camp, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.

Howard has endured a variety of injuries the last two seasons, with the most significant being a sprained knee that cost him much of this past December. The health issues appeared to take their toll on his productivity in 2013-14, as Howard regressed to a 2.66 GAA and .910 save percentage over his 51 appearances. After backup Jonas Gustavsson took a step forward during his absence last season, Howard will enter the upcoming campaign with a little less job security than he's been accustomed to, but he could reclaim some control of the job with a string of excellent starts out of the gate.

Jimmy Howard called 2013-14 "an OK season" for himself.

"But by no means was it a good or great season," he said. "I think I can be a lot better, a lot more consistent for the guys, and that's what I'm going to work on over the summer." Howard posted his worst numbers since a sophomore year this past season, while sporting a .910 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average. Howard is determined to be better next campaign and he's confident that he can be based on his past.

Jimmy Howard will serve as Detroit's backup goaltender in Game 5.

It's odd that he's healthy enough to sit on the bench, but not start against Boston. Jonas Gustavsson was between the pipes Thursday night and he'll play again this afternoon. There's been some speculation that Howard has a concussion even though the Red Wings say he is suffering from the flu.

There has been some speculation that Jimmy Howard sustained a concussion in Game 3 after a collision with Carl Soderberg.

If that is true, it would expalin a lot of things. Why Howard did not play in Game 4. Why he did not practice on Friday and why he won't play in Saturday's potential elimination game. If we find anything else out we will pass it along.
