Howard will yield to Jonas Gustavsson for Saturday's game against the Flyers, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Howard has played great so far this season, going 3-1-2 with a sub-2.00 goals against average, but Detroit wants to keep him fresh throughout the season. It helps to have a quality backup like Gustavsson, who had a shutout in his first start of the season.

Howard allowed three goals on 26 shots Thursday, but shut the Penguins down completely following Chris Kunitz's mid-second-period goal, allowing the Wings to mount a comeback and come away with an overtime win.

Not the greatest of outings for Howard, but he did rebound quite effectively after allowing all three goals in the game's first 28-plus minutes. Expect him back out there again Saturday in Philadelphia.

Howard (groin) stopped 34 of 36 shots in his return to the net Tuesday versus the Canadiens.

After he was ruled out for the past weekend with the groin issue, Howard looked to be back in his usual form Tuesday before folding late. The Red Wings controlled the game for the first two periods while holding a 1-0 lead, but Howard's shutout bid ended with just over three minutes remaining, as he lost sight of the puck on Alex Galchenyuk's game-tying tally. He would then yielded the winning marker to David Desharnais in the extra period to take his second OT loss of the season.

Howard (groin) is ready to return and should be available for Tuesday's game against the Canadiens, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

As suspected, Howard's groin injury was nothing major, and the reassignment of fellow goaltender Petr Mrazek means Howard should be good to suit up again.

Howard suffered a minor groin injury during Friday's win over the Maple Leafs and will not be available to back up Jonas Guastvsson on Saturday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.

General manager Ken Holland suggested Howard's injury wasn't worrisome and that the goalie would in all likelihood be ready to go for Tuesday's game against the Canadiens, but the situation still bears watching. Even minor groin concerns can often prove more problematic than initially thought, so Howard will need to show the requisite progress over the next couple of days before receiving clearance to play. As a short-term measure, the Red Wings placed Howard on the 48-hour goalie injured reserve and in a corresponding move, recalled Petr Mrazek, who will serve as Gustavsson's backup Saturday.

Howard, at least so far, had looked solid in net, sporting a 2-1-1 record with a 1.72 goals against average. He will get the night off Saturday for the second half of a back-to-back, but he is entrenched in the starting position.

Howard will be in the net Friday against the Maple Leafs, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.

Seeking to prove that his disappointing 2013-14 campaign was an aberration, Howard has gotten off to a tremendous start to the season, going 1-1-1 with a 1.95 GAA and .927 save percentage over his three starts. The trio of strong outings has allowed Howard to fend off backup Jonas Gustavsson for duty at this point, but he figures to receive his first rest of the season on Saturday, when Detroit will again match up with Toronto for the second game of their back-to-back set.

Howard stopped 37 of the 39 shots he faced in Wednesday's shootout loss to the Bruins.

Howard kept the Wings in the game with some spectacular saves, especially late in the third period with time winding down. Unfortunately, his luck ran out in the shootout when he allowed goals to both Bruins shooters, but his performance was impressive nonetheless.
