Marian Hossa might be ready to return from his upper-body injury this weekend.

If he doesn't return by then, next week could be a very good possibility. "Hoss is doing much better," coach Joel Quenneville said. "I think he's going to get on the ice [Wednesday] while we're gone. It's going to be on his own here. We'll get a better idea when we get him together with our team, but I don't think he's too far away." He won't play Wednesday night and that will mark his fourth straight absence from the Blackhawks' lineup.

Marian Hossa (upper body) is projected to resume skating next week and return to playing the week after.

"He's on target. He looks good. He's working hard in the gym," said coach Joel Quenneville. "I think at some point this week he'll be on the ice. Hopefully he'll be playing before we know it. I don't think it's going to be shorter than two [weeks]." Hossa suffered an upper-body injury last Saturday against Pittsburgh and his initial timetable was set for two-to-three weeks.

Marian Hossa will be out of action for two to three weeks because of an upper-body injury.

He was hurt during Saturday's outdoor game against Pittsburgh on a hit by Craig Adams along the boards. The Blackhawks haven't called anyone up from the minors yet to replace him, but that remains a possibility. Brandon Saad will continue to play with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp in Hossa's place.

Marian Hossa joined his teammates for practice on Tuesday.

"So far, I feel good; I felt normal," said Hossa, who represented Slovakia at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. "The time change is good now. I've been here a few days. It's nice to get back and get ready for the rest of the season." He is enjoying a superb season, but coach Joel Quenneville still plans to monitor the veteran winger's ice time in practices and morning skates. The Chicago bench boss wants to take the same approach with his nine other Olympians and give them "maintenance days" when they are needed.

Marian Hossa scored twice in Slovakia's 5-3 loss against the Czech Republic.

Hossa was given a daunting task after it became apparent that Marian Gaborik wouldn't be available for the Olympics due to an injury. That left Hossa as the team's only elite forward, but he only managed to record an assist in the 2014 Olympics before this contest. Tomas Surovy scored the team's other goal against the Czech Republic. Michal Handzus and Andrej Sekera each recorded two assists in the losing effort. Slovakia has been eliminated from the tournament.

Marian Hossa is projected to play alongside Michal Handzus and Tomas Tatar on Slovakia's first line.

Hossa and Handzus both play for Chicago, so they shouldn't have much time getting used to each other. Meanwhile, this will be a great learning opportunity for Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Tatar, who has accumulated 76 games worth of NHL experience. That trio will represent Slovakia's only line comprised entirely of current NHL talent. However, Florida's Tomas Kopecky and the Red Wings' Tomas Jurco will make up two-thirds of their second unit.
