Ron Hainsey D CAR 12 Days

Hainsey was a plus-3 in Monday's 4-1 win over Toronto, but failed to record a point for the fifth consecutive game. He now has just five points in 45 games so far this season.

Hainsey is a great example of a player who is worth more to his real-life NHL team than to fantasy owners. He doesn't provide much offense, but takes care of business in his own end by blocking shots (second on the team with 74) and killing penalties (fourth in shorthanded ice time per game with 2:08). Overall, Hainsey is a workhorse who rarely needs a night off, which is why the Canes keep him around. Sadly, however, these attributes carry little weight in the fantasy world, which is why you should avoid using him if possible.

Hainsey potted his first goal of the season -- and Carolina's lone regulation tally -- in Tuesday's 2-1 shootout win over the Devils.

Hainsey isn't known for his scoring, that's for sure; in fact, before scoring four goals last year, he'd gone without one in two consecutive campaigns. With only four points to show for 33 games on the year, Hainsey's meager fantasy value is tied to his somewhat above-average hit and block totals, but his minus-9 rating is damaging to even that limited allure.

Hainsey recorded his third point of the season - an assist on Elias Lindholm's empty net goal - to help seal a 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs on Friday.

Hainsey's days as a blueliner who can contribute offensively are long gone - the last time he recorded more than 20 points in a season was back in 2009-10 when he posted five goals and 21 helpers for the Jets. These days, the best the 33-year old Hainsey can do is take care of business in his own zone. He does currently rank second on the team in blocked shots with 50, but his plus-minus rating of -9 leaves something to be desired. Bottom line, Hainsey's shortcomings far outweigh his positive attributes. For fantasy purposes, it's best to avoid using him if possible.

Hainsey has just a single assist in 13 games so far this season, but leads the Hurricanes in blocked shots with 25.

Hainsey's offensive game has been on the decline for several years now, having not cracked the 20-point barrier since the 2009-10 season with Winnipeg. However, he still brings a solid defensive game, which makes him much more valuable to the Canes than it does to fantasy owners. Overall, not much fantasy value here, unless you are in a very deep league that counts the "BKS" stat category.

Ron Hainsey has inked a three-year deal with Carolina worth $8.5 million.

He will make $3 million for the next two seasons and $2.5 million in 2016-17. Hainsey would've been eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1. He dressed in all 82 games last campaign, while compiling 15 points, 124 blocked shots and a minus-9 rating. He also averaged 21:26 per contest.
