Jonas Gustavsson G DET 4 Days

Gustavsson made 30 saves in a 1-0 overtime win over Toronto on Saturday night.

He was outstanding in his season debut. He's always struggled to stay healthy, so you certainly can't count on him on a consistent basis. But he sure looks like he can help fantasy owners on a match-ups basis.

Gustavsson is expected to make his first start of the season Saturday against the Maple Leafs,'s Ansar Khan reports.

Gustavsson shook off a knee injury late in the preseason to make himself available for last week's season opener, but the solid play in the net by Jimmy Howard has kept Gustavsson glued to the bench. The Red Wings' weekend back-to-back set should finally allow the backup netminder to see the ice, but unless Howard again succumbs to the injury woes that marred his 2013-14 campaign, Gustavsson doesn't figure to cut into his workload too much this season.

Gustavsson appears to be recovered from the knee injury he suffered late in training camp.

There was some concern the Red Wings may have needed to carry three goalies on their Opening Night roster to serve as insurance for Gustavsson's injury, but that ended up proving unnecessary. Jimmy Howard has started both of the Red Wings' games thus far and is slated to man the net again Wednesday, but look for Gustavsson to see the ice fairly soon.

Gustavsson suffered a knee injury last Friday and may not be ready for Thursday's season opener, Ansar Khan of reports.

The Red Wings have been mum about Gustavsson's status, but he was unable to take part in Tuesday's practice, so he may not be healthy enough to play Thursday. If Gustavsson needs more time to recover, Petr Mrazek would be in line to serve as the backup goaltender behind starter Jimmy Howard.

Gustavsson made 20 saves on 22 shots in a 3-1 preseason loss to Boston on Saturday.

Gustavsson played decently in his first preseason tilt, especially against a tough Boston team playing some of its regulars. He should see a fair amount of time in net this year, especially if Jimmy Howard continues to struggle.

The big question surrounding Jonas Gustavsson going into the 2014-15 campaign is whether or not he can stay healthy.

Gustavsson has been plagued by groin injuries for the last couple of years, but he did feel good in the second half of the 2013-14 season. He'll start next season as Detroit's backup goaltender and should be fairly good in that role as long as he stays healthy.

Detroit GM Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press on Thursday that "it appears we've agreed to a one-year deal" with Jonas Gustavsson.

His extension is expected to be worth around $1.5 million, which is what he made in his past two seasons with the Red Wings. Holland said the paperwork should be worked out within days. Detroit didn't want to give Gustavsson more than a one-year contract because they didn't want netminder Petr Mrazek sitting down in the minors for too long. Gustavsson will serve as Jimmy Howard's backup in 2014-15, while Mrazek gets another year to start plenty of games with Grand Rapids.

The Wings are comfortable with Gustavsson as their backup goalie, which will give Petr Mrazek another year to develop in the minors.
