One of the major reasons the Red Wings have struggled this season is the lack of production they have received from their offseason free agent acquisitions.

The group of incoming free agents was made up of Jonas Gustavsson, Carlo Colaiacovo, Jordin Tootoo, Mikael Samuelsson and Damien Brunner and the Swiss winger is the only member of that group to offer anything in the way of production although he has also struggled of late. Some of the difficulties have been related to injury, however there's no denying the fact these acquisitions haven't lived up to expectations.

Things didn't go a whole lot better for Jonas Gustavsson, who relieved Jimmy Howard during the Detroit Red Wings' 7-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.

Gustavsson allowed three of the seven Chicago goals (stopping nine out of 12 shots). He didn't get the loss, however, although that likely doesn't make much of a difference in most fantasy leagues.

Jonas Gustavsson made 28 saves in the Detroit Redwings 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Gustavsson has only made six appearences this season thanks to Jimmy Howard's stellar play and the importance of every game in this shortend season. Gustavsson has been ok when he has started, but he could stand to increase his save percentage. He's non existent in fantasy world because of how Howard dominates the starts so look elsewhere.

This is Gustavsson's first start since March 13th when he was lit up for five goals on 22 shots. He gets the call tonight after Jimmy Howard had a great weekend. Howard went 2-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .971 SV% vs. the Ducks on Friday and Sunday. Gustavsson has a good matchup against a Coyotes team who have lost five straight.

Jonas Gustavsson will get the start in goal Monday against the Phoenix Coyotes.

Jimmy Howard, the usual number one netminder, was sensational Sunday in stopping the Ducks in Anaheim for the second straight game but needed a break so Gustavsson will start Monday. He is 1-2-1 with a .878 save percentage and a 2.85 GAA this season.

Jonas Gustavsson didn't have a great night on Wednesday as the Detroit Red Wings fell to the Calgary Flames 5-2.

Many wondered why the Red Wings invested in "The Monster" as a backup this offseason; so far that confusion seems justified. He allowed five goals on just 22 shots, dropping his record to 1-2-1 with a putrid .878 save percentage. Whether Jimmy Howard is injured or just in need of rest, Detroit needs more from the big Swede.
