Niklas Backstrom G MIN 1 Month

Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said Backstrom (abdomen, hip) is feeling good and and will be ready to participate in training camp, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Any way you spin it, Backstrom had a miserable 2013-14 campaign, as the veteran netminder suited up for 21 games and posted a lousy 3.02 GAA and .899 save percentage before undergoing season-ending abdominal and hip surgery. Though he's ostensibly healthy, Backstrom is now 36 and doesn't appear poised to enter the season as the club's starter, especially with Darcy Kuemper and Josh Harding still around. His sizable contract may be the only thing keeping him around.

Niklas Backstrom (abdomen) should be able to start practicing with pads on in July.

Backstrom has been plagued by a variety of lower and mid-body injuries in recent years. He wasn't able to participate in either of the Wild's last two playoff runs as a result.

The goalie situation in Minnesota will take a little while to sort out and much will depend on doctors' reports and the salary cap.

Niklas Backstrom, who had two recent surgeries (one to repair his core abdominal muscle and one to repair a hip), is under contract for two more years, and can't be released as he is an injured player. Josh Harding still has some obstacles to deal with as a result of his multiple sclerosis before he can be counted, Darcy Kuemper is a restricted free agent and Ilya Bryzgalov is a UFA. Minnesota GM Chuck Fletcher acknowledged that he didn't have a plan for the team's goaltending spots as two many balls are in the air. He did say the team may have to carry three netminders in 2014-15, though. Stay tuned for updates on this situation.

Nicklas Backstrom scored a goal for Washington, but it wasn't enough as the Capitals dropped a 3-2 decision to Pittsburgh Monday.

The power-play goal was the 13th marker of the campaign for the center, who is better known for his playmaking ability. Eric Fehr also found the back of the net for Washington in the loss.

Niklas Backstrom has been shut down for the rest of the season because of an abdominal injury.

He has been dealing with the issue all year after he had off-season sports hernia surgery and he probably needs another procedure. "Our goal for Nik is to get him healthy for next year," said GM Chuck Fletcher. "Needless to say, he's disappointed." The Wild acquired Ilya Brygalov from Edmonton on Tuesday to serve as their backup in Backstrom's place.

Niklas Backstrom will be dealing with abdominal issues for the remainder of the 2013-14 campaign.

That doesn't necessarily mean that Backstrom is done for the season. He missed Tuesday's practice, but the hope is that he'll be back on the ice Wednesday. Keep your expectations low for Backstrom going forward.

Niklas Backstrom saw an abdominal specialist over the break.

The same specialist repaired his sports hernia last spring in Philadelphia. Backstrom knows what his issue is, but he is going to leave it up to the Wild to announce it if they choose to. He hopes the issue won't linger any longer and that his new treatment protocols and off-ice workouts will help.
