Gonchar (ankle) will not return to action in the Stars' next two games, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Gonchar has demonstrated progress by resuming skating Monday, but he's probably not going to be ready play until next week at the earliest. In addition to the ankle ailment that continues to keep Gonchar out, the Stars also lost Patrik Nemeth to a season-ending injury this past Saturday, weakening an already-thin Dallas blue line.

Gonchar has been ruled out for three-to-five weeks with an ankle injury, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.

The multi-week injury likely ensures that Gonchar will open the season on injured reserve, and surely was a motivating factor in the Stars getting a deal done with restricted free agent Brenden Dillon. Now 40 years old and a full four years removed from his last 50-point campaign, Gonchar shouldn't be on anyone's radar outside of very deep leagues.

Coach Lindy Ruff acknowledged Gonchar (ankle) could be out for "a period of time," Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Though the Stars are still a full week away from their regular-season opener against the Blackhawks, Ruff's ominous words suggest Gonchar's status is in serious question for that contest, and possibly beyond. More information regarding his condition should be available in the coming days, but it might be prudent to move him down a few pegs on your draft board, in the event the injury proves to be more serious. Gonchar's fantasy appeal was already on the downturn before he suffered the ailment, as he tallied only two goals and 20 assists in his first season in Big D, with his 22 points representing his lowest output for a full campaign since 1997-98.

The Stars spent part of the summer trying to find a trade partner for Gonchar, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The 40-year-old defenseman averaged just 17:37 of ice time last season and a paltry 13:24 during the playoffs. His production dropped off steeply as he posted 22 points in 76 games last season after scoring 27 in 45 games the year before. Despite the team's willingness to reportedly eat half of his $5 million salary, they couldn't find a home for Gonchar. He should still have some upside, but it sounds as though Dallas may not give him many minutes and his leash may be short, especially with a glut of young d-men looking to crack the roster this season.

The Dallas Stars aren't interested in buying out Sergei Gonchar.

They might still trade Gonchar if there's a market for him. However, he's 40 years old now and is coming off a rough season, so there might not be many interested parties for the once great offensive defenseman.
