The Habs decided not to bring Gilbert along on their road trip after he took a puck to the jaw in Saturday's win over the Sharks. Nathan Beaulieu is slated to fill in for Gilbert in the interim.

Gilbert has typically occupied a spot on the Habs' third defensive pairing over Mike Weaver over the last several games, but it still amounts to a diminished role from what he enjoyed with the Panthers a season ago. As a top-four player for Florida in 2013-14, Gilbert tallied 28 points in 73 games; a three-minute drop in ice time this season has limited the blueliner's production with Montreal to just nine points thus far.

It appears that the acquisition of Bryan Allen from the Ducks on Thursday will squeeze Gilbert out of the lineup, as he skated as an extra with Nathan Beaulieu at the team's morning skate. Gilbert has shown more offensive upside in the past than Allen, but that production hasn't seemed to translate in his first season in Montreal. He's mustered just three points to accompany his plus-7 rating over 21 games.

Gilbert made his debut in a Canadiens uniform in Wednesday night's win over Toronto. He had four blocked shots, two hits and four minutes in penalties while finishing a plus-1 in 22:29 of ice time.
Gilbert is the replacement for Josh Gorges as one of the Habs' top-four blue-liners. If he continues to block four shots a game, the Montreal faithful will not notice a difference. One other note, Gilbert skated 1:01 on the second-unit power play.
