Gilbert collected an assist and two PIM in Sunday's loss to the Coyotes.

Gilbert has typically occupied a spot on the Habs' third defensive pairing over Mike Weaver over the last several games, but it still amounts to a diminished role from what he enjoyed with the Panthers a season ago. As a top-four player for Florida in 2013-14, Gilbert tallied 28 points in 73 games; a three-minute drop in ice time this season has limited the blueliner's production with Montreal to just nine points thus far.

Gilbert scored a goal and added an assist in Saturday's 4-1 win over Pittsburgh. The goal was his first since Oct. 28.

He has just seven points on the season and it was his first two-point game since January, 2014. He's not known for his offense, so don't mistake this burst as fantasy worthy. He's not likely to help your roster.

Gilbert is a healthy scratch Friday night, Hockey Inside Out reports.

Head coach Michel Therrien will go with just six defensemen Friday, so someone had to sit.

Gilbert will likely be a healthy scratch Saturday against the Bruins, Marc Antoine Godin of the Montreal Gazette reports.

It appears that the acquisition of Bryan Allen from the Ducks on Thursday will squeeze Gilbert out of the lineup, as he skated as an extra with Nathan Beaulieu at the team's morning skate. Gilbert has shown more offensive upside in the past than Allen, but that production hasn't seemed to translate in his first season in Montreal. He's mustered just three points to accompany his plus-7 rating over 21 games.

Gilbert made his debut in a Canadiens uniform in Wednesday night's win over Toronto. He had four blocked shots, two hits and four minutes in penalties while finishing a plus-1 in 22:29 of ice time.

Gilbert is the replacement for Josh Gorges as one of the Habs' top-four blue-liners. If he continues to block four shots a game, the Montreal faithful will not notice a difference. One other note, Gilbert skated 1:01 on the second-unit power play.

Gilbert looks like he'll pair up with Andrei Markov on defense this season, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.

Inked by the Habs to a two-year contract in July, Gilbert has been next to Markov since Day 1 in camp, and the pair has seemed to click. Though both blueliners are puck-movers rather than true stay-at-home defensemen, the two vets are both savvy enough to know when to take risks and when to play it safe. It may be difficult for Gilbert to improve upon the 28 points he accrued in 73 games with the Panthers last season, but he shouldn't have much difficulty finishing on the positive side in plus/minus rating now that he's a member of the Eastern Conference runner-ups.

Tom Gilbert has been signed by Montreal for two years and $5.6 million.

He essentially replaces Josh Gorges who was traded to Buffalo. If Gilbert is motivated he could be a nice second power-play rearguard. Expect 25-30 points in 2014-15.

Tom Gilbert had sports hernia surgery on Thursday, so he's done for the rest of the season.

He notched three goals and 28 points in 73 games with the Panthers. He was a pleasant surprise in Florida after earning a spot on the club from a professional tryout during training camp.

Tom Gilbert could be one of many Florida Panthers who will be traded once the NHL is back in full swing following the Olympics.

The Panthers are 15th in the 16-team Eastern Confernce and really have no chance to make the playoffs. Players who are on one-year contracts such as Gilbert, Marcel Goc, Tim Thomas, Scott Gomez, Brad Boyes and defenseman Mike Weaver could be on the move. Stay tuned.
