Giguere will announce his retirement from the NHL next week, Elliot Teaford of the Daily Breeze reports.

Giguere's last start came in the season finale for Avs, saving 33 of 36 shots. He has had a long NHL career, first starting in the NHL in the 1996-97 season. His best seasons came with the Ducks, including a playoff MVP performance in the 2002-03 season. Giguere was a free agent in the offseason, and rather than look for a contract for another season likely serving as a backup, the 37-year-old goaltender will hang up his skates.

Colorado wants Reto Berra to serve as the team's backup next season, so Jean-Sebastien Giguere won't be retained.

He'll be an unrestricted free agent this summer and there's been plenty of speculation that he'll retire. You could choose to be bitter and cranky, or you could choose to be a professional and enjoy the time you have left. I want to take it day to day and make the most of it," Giguere said. "It's not (Berra's) fault, and it's not my fault. It's just the way it is. He's a great guy, so I have nothing bad to say about him." The veteran netminder will serve as Colorado's backup during the playoffs.
