David Backes C STL 26 Days

Backes scored four consecutive goals == the first two on the power play -- to account for much of the damage in Tuesday's 6-0 rout of Arizona.

Now that's a supernatural hat trick. Backes has been having a slow year, but games like this can really jump-start things. He's been looking better in general lately, having now tallied seven points over the course of a four-game road trip. We all know Backes -- a two-time 30-goal man -- is capable of taking his game to another level, but the fact remains that Tuesday accounts for nearly a third of his season goal total. Let's see some more, huh, David?

Backes grabbed an assist, fired three shots on net and finished with a plus-1 rating in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Ducks.

Captain Backes now has four points over his last four games and 19 in 37 contests this season. Owners are hoping that his seven points, 28 SOG and 15 PIM in his last 11 games are a sign that the 30-year-old power forward is awaking from a frustrating slumber this year, as his nine goals and minus-5 rating are well off the mark of his 27-goal, plus-14 ledger from 2013-14.

Backes assisted on both St. Louis goals and went minus-1 in Tuesday's loss to the Predators.

He won 10 of 15 faceoffs and picked up the primary assists on tallies by Chris Butler and T.J. Oshie, but was also on the ice for all three Nashville goals. Backes' stats continue to lag, as he has just 18 points and a minus-6 rating in 36 games, but the return of Brian Elliott to the Blues' net should help the whole team undergo a plus-minus correction. The missing offense is a bigger question mark, as the Blues' top-line center simply hasn't been able to find his stride all year long.

Backes scored a power-play goal, his eighth overall, Thursday in a loss to the Kings. He added a minus-2 rating, two hits and a blocked shot in the contest.

Backes now has points in three of his last four games to raise his season total to 15 points in 31 games. His performance has been underwhelming this season, so a hot streak is welcome.

Backes (face) registered an assist and three shots on goal over 16:17 of ice time in Thursday's win over the Islanders.

Though he was forced to wear a face mask, Backes didn't seem to experience a notable decline in the quality of his play. However, with 13 points and a minus-4 rating through 28 games, he has been mostly a disappointment so far this season.

Coach Ken Hitchcock confirmed that Backes (face) will be in the lineup Thursday against the Islanders, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.

This qualifies as a surprise after Backes was off the ice for each of the last two days while he continued to experience pain from some facial lacerations that he sustained Monday night, along with a few lost teeth. Backes will be forced to wear a full face shield to protect himself from further aggravation Thursday night, but it doesn't sound like he'll notice any other limitations. However, if Backes experiences even slight discomfort with his injury while playing, expect Hitchcock to rein in his ice time.

Backes (face) appears doubtful to play Thursday against the Islanders, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Backes has missed practice each of the past two days while he continues to be in pain from the facial lacerations he suffered in Monday's tilt with the Panthers. Furthermore, coach Ken Hitchcock noted that Backes would be forced to wear a face shield for multiple games once he returns, which could come Saturday if he experiences enough healing over the next few days.

Backes (face) remained away from the team during Tuesday's practice a night after taking a puck to the mouth area, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Backes left Monday's game in the first period before returning with a face cage in the second, but didn't suit up for the final 20 minutes. Fortunately for Backes, the Blues have ruled out a concussion, which have the plagued the center the last couple of seasons. Instead, it appears some facial lacerations and dental work were the primary concerns for Backes, who remains in plenty of discomfort. The Blues will reassess his condition at Wednesday's practice before determining if he might be able to play Thursday versus the Islanders.

Backes returned to the ice Monday against the Panthers but did so with a face cage, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.

Backes left the ice for a brief period of time before making his eventual return after suffering an apparent injury to the face. When considering that he was able to play through the injury Monday, it seems reasonable to assume that he'll be in good shape to play Thursday against the Islanders.

Backes left Monday's game against the Panthers with an unspecified injury and it's still unclear whether or not he'll return to the ice, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.

Backes should be considered day-to-day until the Blues release further information about his injury. If he is unable to make a return to the ice Monday, his next opportunity to prove his health will be against the Islanders on Thursday.
