David Backes C STL 24 Days

Not surprisingly, Backes did not participate in the Blues' practice on Wednesday, Lou Korac of the Blues' official site reports.

The practice was only optional for the Blues so this may have been a rest day for Backes after being removed from Tuesday's game against the Stars with an apparent head injury. Given that it is a head injury, Backes will have to through the concussion protocols, which places his status for Thursday's game against the Ducks in jeopardy. The 30-year-old winger has scored two goals and three assists in eight games played this season.

Backes was removed from Tuesday's game against the Stars with an upper-body injury and will not return.

Backes fell hard and appeared to hit his head on the ice during the first period of action. He remained down on the ice for a while before finally ambling to his feet and heading to the locker room. He'll more than likely be evaluated for a possible concussion over the next 24 hours, putting his status in peril for the Blues' critical showdown with the Ducks on Thursday.

Backes netted a power-play goal and added an assist in Saturday's blowout win over Arizona.

Backes has started the season with four points in his first four games, including two power-play goals. The top-line center also had three hits and four shots Saturday, a prime example of the value he provides in almost all fantasy categories. Backes appears destined for another 50-60 point campaign in 2014-15.

Backes finished the preseason with three goals and no assists in three games played.

The winger finished last season with 57 points and should have a similar output in the 2014-15 season. Backes will continue to center the Blues' first line with Patrik Berglund and T.J. Oshie. The signing of Paul Stastny may cut into the captain's playing time but look for Backes to have another solid season.

Backes will center wingers Patrick Berglund and TJ Oshie on the Blues top line to start the year, according to coach Ken Hitchcock, reports Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Backes has played a lot with Berglund and Oshie with good success. They should pick up where they left off.

David Backes played in the playoffs with a broken toe on his left foot.

It was caused by a slap shot from teammate Alexander Steen late in the regular season. Backes did not suffer a concussion from the hit he received from Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook in Game 2, but he did sustain a stiff neck.

David Backes logged 21:35 of ice time in his return to the lineup on Friday.

"For not skating, for not playing, I thought he did fine," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He hit the wall a few times so we had to put other people on the ice, but for coming back into - how long's he not skated for, two weeks? - to walk in and play those minutes was impressive." Backes posted a game-high eight hits and a minus-2 rating in St. Louis' 3-2 overtime loss to Chicago. In three games in the series, he has one assist and four shots.

David Backes is in the lineup for Friday night's Game 5 showdown with the Blackhawks.

Backes will be a huge boost to a Blues squad that has lost both games since he was sidelined from illegal hit by the Hawks' Brent Seabrook in Game 2. Derek Roy is scratched for the Blues.

David Backes (upper body) didn't participate in Friday's morning skate.

Backes still hasn't been ruled out for Friday night's game, but we doubt he'll be in the lineup. He has already missed two contests since he Brent Seabrook struck him with a high hit. If Backes sustained a concussion, then the fact that he hasn't been skating likely means that he isn't close to returning.
