Sam Gagner C PHO 5 Months

Coach Dallas Eakins is "hopeful" that Sam Gagner will play Thursday night.

He took part in the morning skate after he was injured late in Tuesday's shootout win over Minnesota. The Oilers called up Anton Lander on Wednesday to play in Gagner's place if he's unable to go.

Sam Gagner scored once and assisted on the other in the Oilers 4-2 loss to Los Angeles Sunday.

After a very slow start to the season in which he missed the opening two weeks of the season as he broke his jaw during training camp, Gagner has 11 points in his last 12 games. Gagner is worth looking at late next season as most will look at this season and see only seven goals and 30 points with a minus-20 rating in 52 games.

Sam Gagner is doing his best to block out the trade rumors.

Gagner admitted that it's harder to do as we get closer to the trade deadline. "I've had trade rumors before in my career, but this feels a little different," Gagner said. His no-movement clause won't kick in until the 2014-15 campaign, so if the Oilers wanted to deal him, now would be the ideal time. After years of floundering near or at the bottom of the league, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Oilers do something bold on the trade market.

TSN insiders are suggesting the Los Angeles Kings are seeking some offensive help and is throwing out the name of Edmonton forward Sam Gagner.

"He's got two years left, not a rental, at a $4.8 million cap hit," the TSN speculation says. "It will be tough to make the numbers work on a cap-heavy team like the Los Angeles Kings, but he is a player of interest."

Sam Gagner scored a goal in Edmonton's 5-2 loss on Tuesday.

Gagner has been picking up the pace lately with six points in his last seven games. That still gives him just six goals and 13 assists in 36 contests in 2013-14.

Sam Gagner seemed okay afterward, but left the game late in the third after blocking a shot.

Gagner left the ice limping but seemed to be fine in the dressing room as he dove to block the shot. Gagner's name is being bandied about in trade rumors as he seems to be the logical choice at this time to be traded if the Oilers try to pull the trigger on a deal. Gagner has five goals and 18 points in 35 games but was minus-two last night and is now minus-19, the fifth worst in the NHL.

Sam Gagner had two assists on Sunday and was a rare plus-player at plus-one.

Gagner is having trouble in the plus-minus category as he is at minus-17 this season. He led the Oilers in power play time on ice Sunday with 3:13 minutes. He has struggled this season with only five goals and 16 points in 32 games but is primed for a breakout second half.

Sam Gagner registered an assist in Edmonton's 5-1 defeat on Thursday.

It was just Gagner's second point in his last eight contests. With just 14 points and a minus-17 rating in 30 games this season, he's been one of the bigger disappointments for Edmonton this season. We think he'll have a stronger second half from an offensive perspective, but that plus/minus rating is likely to continue to decline due to the Oilers' sorry state.

Sam Gagner has just 12 points and a minus-16 ratings in 25 games this season.

Gagner hasn't managed to get his season going since starting the campaign sidelined with a broken jaw. "I think he's better than from when he first came back," Oilers coach Dallas Eakins said. "I think it's a bunch of dominos with him. When he came back we were in such a horrible place, he felt like the team needed him and we did. I think he rushed getting back maybe before he was quite ready or quite comfortable for the good of the team." Missing the start of a campaign is particularly challenging for players to rebound from and it doesn't help that the Oilers as a whole have been horrible. Even still, we expect Gagner to improve in the second half of the season.

Sam Gagner will not be subjected to any extra disciplinary action for his crosscheck on Paul Stastny Thursday.

Gagner had a major for the crosscheck and a game misconduct as he put the Oilers behind the eight ball with his penalty in the first period as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Boyd Gordon were forced to double shift the remainder of the game. Gagner has four goals and 12 points in 24 games and the 15 penalty minutes Thursday give him 19 this season. His biggest downfall is his minus-16 rating.
