Ryan Ellis D NAS 9 Days

Ellis netted his third goal of the season in Thursday's victory over the Coyotes.

The 23-year-old has been a dependable contributor while taking on a greater role for the Predators this season. Ellis has noticed a rise in ice time of over three minutes compared to a season ago and has been a steady performer, providing 11 points, 17 PIM and 37 blocked shots over 28 contests.

Ellis contributed a pair of assists to Tuesday's 9-2 pasting of the Maple Leafs.

The points snapped a four-game drought for Ellis, who's still stuck on one goal among 37 shots this year, but nonetheless has a respectable nine points in 18 games. His development continues to proceed nicely.

Ellis scored his first goal of the year, assisted on the Preds' other two tallies, went plus-2 and potted the winner in the shootout Tuesday against the Coyotes.

That's how you put the team on your back. Ellis had gone four straight without a point after notching an assist in the opener, and this is a heck of a way to break the slump. The 23-year-old Ellis has massive offensive upside, but will have a hard time realizing it while skating on Nashville's third defensive pairing.

Ellis, who signed a five-year $12.5 million contract last week, skated with the team Monday, Eric Stromgren of The Tennessean reports.

Ellis did not play in either of the team's split-squad scrimmages against the Panthers on Saturday, but could be in the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jackets. We expect he will be fully up to speed once the regular season begins in October.

Ellis and the Predators agreed to a new contract Thursday, according to the Tennessean.

Terms of the deal were not immediately released, but are expected to be announced when Ellis is expected to report to training camp in Nashville. Ellis, who last season ranked third among Predators defensemen in points with 27, is now expected to reprise his role as a top-six blueliner heading into this season.

Preds GM David Poile addressed Ellis' contract situation Saturday, saying the main stumbling block continues to be money, according to the Tennessean. "Unfortunately at this time we have not agreed what they think and what we think is fair compensation," Poile said. "We want [Ellis]. We are not trading him, we really like him. We really like the way he played last year. It's just a disagreement on dollars."

Ellis, who has missed the first two days of training camp so far, played in 80 games last season for and finished with 27 points - his highest full season total to date. And while there is still plenty of time left to get a deal done before the start of the season, the clock is ticking. Not only is he missing out on conditioning drills and scrimmages, the more Ellis misses of training camp, the greater the chances of some other defenseman impressing the coaching staff and grabbing a roster spot that might otherwise go to Ellis. Bottom line, we think Ellis will get signed by the start of the regular season, but what his role on the team will be is anybody's guess. He's a risky fantasy pick right now, until all of the above gets sorted out.

Ellis and the Predators are reportedly not close to signing a new contract, according to Josh Cooper of the Tennessean.

Ellis, currently a restricted free agent, finally put together a decent season last year, posting 27 points (6G, 21A) in 80 games. However, his development has still been far too slow for the Preds' liking, considering his stellar offensive contributions in junior (300+ points in four seasons from 2007-2011). Assuming the two sides can agree on a deal for the upcoming season, Ellis will likely return to his usual role as a second-pairing, second power play defenseman. However, the Preds are well-stocked with blue line talent, so they are likely not in a huge rush to get a deal done, if it means overpaying Ellis. For fantasy purposes, be sure to keep him off your draft lists as long as he remains unsigned.

Ryan Ellis scored the overtime winner to lead Canada to a 3-2 victory over Sweden.

The win gives Canada first place in their division heading into the quarter-finals of the World Championship. They are tied in the standings with Sweden but will take first place due to the win. Brayden Schenn and Kevin Bieksa also scored for Canada who were down 2-0. Linus Klasen and Joakim Lindstrom gave the Swedes the 2-0 lead.

It has taken him awhile, but defenseman Ryan Ellis seems to have found his offensive game.

Ellis is starting to flash his offense with five points in his past five games. Because of his size (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) Ellis needs to score because defensemen his size don't usually stick around for their defensive ability. With the way he's coming on, Ellis might be worth taking a chance on if he's available in your fantasy league.

Ryan Ellis scored and assisted in the Predators' 5-4 loss to the Avalanche on Saturday night.

Ellis has five points over his last five games, helping him to three goals and 16 points on the season. Roman Josi also notched a goal and an assist, and he now has points in three straight. Craig Smith picked up the other goal.
