In case you noticed that Patrik Elias missed Wednesday's practice and are wondering why, it was because he was with his wife for the birth of their daughter.

Kaila Elias is their second child and, in the words of agent Allan Walsh, is "doing spectacular." Congratulations to the growing Elias family. He is still penciled in to play on Thursday.

"Something was going around there because a few of the athletes got sick and I got a fever for four days, so I couldn't really breathe much and all that," Elias said. "I had bad bronchitis. It was the wrong time, but I'm happy to be back now and feeling well." Elias isn't expected to miss any playing time with the Devils as a result of what happened.

The New Jersey Devils have scored only 13 goals in their last eight games.

The lack of scoring prompted Patrik Elias to state on Saturday night following the Devils 3-0 loss, that New Jersey needs to trade for a goal scorer. "It doesn't take a rocket scientist," Elias said. "We're not scoring enough goals. We're getting chances, but not scoring enough goals. It's from head to toe. It's not like we have one guy that's scoring 30 or 40 goals right now. It's the whole team and it's unfortunate. Yeah, you can always add some threats for scoring." Boy, would Ilya Kovalchuk look good in a Devils uniform.

Patrik Elias thinks some of his teammates are playing selfishly and that's hurting the Devils.

Elias naturally wouldn't name names. The Devils have lost two straight games and are now 22-21-11 this season. There's a very tight race going on in the Eastern Conference for the second Wild Card spot, but if New Jersey allows their current slide to continue, then they'll fall well behind that group.
