Matt Duchene chipped in three assists and added the winning goal in the shootout to lift Colorado to a 5-4 win over Phoenix in a battle of non-playoff bound teams.

Duchene's numbers trailed off a bit down the stretch, but when looking at his 2013 campaign as a whole, his 43 points in 46 games has solidified his position as one of the best fantasy centres in the league despite playing on an awful Avs team.

Matt Duchene had a goal and an assist on Wednesday.

Duchene has 16 goals and 22 assists this season. He now has 10 more points than he recorded in 58 contests in 2011-12. He might not be able to maintain his nearly point-per-game pace in 2013-14, but he's a good candidate to surpass the 70-point marker next season.

Matt Duchene was very supportive Jean-Sebastien Giguere's public attack on his teammates.

Giguere said that "some guys are more worried about their Vegas trip at the end of the season than playing the games." Duchene hopes everyone heard that. "Obviously he let his emotions get the best of him, but sometimes that's a good thing. I was a fan of it," Duchene said. "If there's any guy in here who can say that, it's him. It's good that he's upset. There's other guys in here who are upset as well. This is not fun." All the same, Giguere did apologize to his teammates for his recent comments.

Matt Duchene doesn't think the Colorado Avalanche will simply give up on the season.

At this point, from a franchise standpoint, they're almost incentivized to lose because it will give them a better shot of obtaining the first overall pick. That doesn't mean the players have nothing left to play for though. "A top pick would be great, but I think a positive feeling going into the summer from a great finish would be even better for us," said Duchene. "People are playing for future jobs and contracts, and these last 12 games may be meaningless for the playoffs, but for each one of us in here they all mean something. We need to help each other. That's how we have to finish here." Colorado is currently last in the NHL with a 12-20-4 record.

Matt Duchene generated Colorado's only goal in a 3-1 loss to Nashville on Tuesday night.

His 15th of the year was assisted by P.A. Parenteau and Matt Hunwick. Duchene has 35 points in 35 games this season.

Matt Duchene scored a goal in Colorado's 3-2 loss Monday.

Duchene has bounced back nicely from his rough 2011-12 campaign with 14 goals and 34 points in 34 games this season. When evaluating Duchene for the 2013-14 campaign, it might be best just to forget that the 2011-12 season happened. It's not a good representation of what he can do.

In failing to beat the Vancouver Canucks for the 20th consecutive time in regulation Thursday night, the Avalanche drew closer to winning the Seth Jones sweepstakes - but Colorado star Matt Duchene doesn't want to talk about the promising defenseman at this point.

Jones, the son of former Nuggets player and assistant coach Popeye Jones, is considered the No. 1 prospect available in the NHL draft this year. And given his family's basketball background, the 6-foot-4 player might even be considered a popular guy to the seemingly basketball-first Avalanche ownership that is Kroenke Sports Enterprises, which also owns the Nuggets. After the Avalanche's 4-1 loss to the Canucks at Rogers Arena, selecting Jones with the first overall pick is looking like it's a two-team race between Colorado and the Florida Panthers. "He's a good player, but I'm not going to talk about him. It's not like he's part of our team," said Avs center Matt Duchene, who skated with Jones last summer. "That's not what we're going for. We're trying to get as high in the standings as we can."
