Devan Dubnyk G PHO 2 Months

Coyotes first-string goalie Mike Smith is confident new Arizona backup Devan Dubnyk will rebound next season after struggling last season with three different NHL teams.

Smith and Dubnyk were teammates with Canada's World Championship team last summer "It happened to me so why not other people?" Smith said. "He's a big guy. He moves fairly well and I think under the right guidance, I think he can definitely be a really good goaltender in this league for a long time still. . .I've been there. I know what that feels like, and I'm sure he just wants to come in and get his feet back under him and I think there's no better place to do that than Arizona."

Arizona feels they found a strong backup netminder in Devan Dubnyk.

"That's where we thought Dubnyk was ahead of the pack in terms of a guy that has faced that pressure of being a No. 1 goalie over some time," GM Don Maloney said. The Coyotes are confident that Dubnyk can get his career back on track after he struggled mightily in 2013-14. He's excited for the opportunity and perhaps a reduced role can help him get his confidence back.

Devan Dubnyk has agreed to terms with the Arizona Coyotes.

Dubnyk will earn $800,000 over the course of the one-year deal. Unless the Coyotes sign another netminder, he'll be the favorite to serve as Mike Smith's understudy in 2014-15.

Devan Dubnyk will be unrestricted free agent this summer.

He struggled with the Edmonton Oilers and ended up being relegated to backup duties with Nashville before he was acquired by Montreal. Dubnyk was sent to the minors by the Canadiens after the deal and has been working out with the Black Aces during the playoffs. "I'm not worried about being able to play in the NHL at all. I've played a lot of games (171)," said Dubnyk, who is trying to look on the bright side. "I have to be honest with myself. I can't be demanding a starting job, anywhere. Maybe if I could get into a 1 and 1B and have the opportunity to compete for ice time and for starts ... the most important thing is getting back into the NHL. I don't think I'd take a two-way contract. I hope that's not a decision I have to make." He'll probably have to take a job as a backup if he wants to be on an NHL squad next season.

The Montreal Canadiens acquired Devan Dubnyk from the Nashville Predators for future considerations.

The Predators will retain a portion of Dubnyk's remaining salary. Dubnyk will provide the Canadiens with some added insurance while Carey Price recovers from a lower-body injury. Dubnyk might end up getting into a game with Montreal, but we wouldn't count on him having any fantasy value going forward.

Devan Dubnyk has been put on waivers by Nashville.

The Predators are getting ready to bring Pekka Rinne back into the fold and Dubnyk has appeared in just two games with Nashville since he was acquired from Edmonton. Carter Hutton seized the team's number one goalie position after Dubynk arrived. If he clears then he'll probably be assigned to the minors.

Devan Dubnyk is waiting for his next opportunity to play for Nashville.

Carter Hutton has played the club's last four games. "You always want to play, but I don't think frustrating is the right word when we're having success as a group," Dubnyk said. "The points are crucial right now, and with Hutts playing as well as he is and winning games, it's my job to stay sharp and keep playing in practice and be ready to give these guys points as well when I get called upon." Dubnyk admitted to feeling nervous in his Predators debut, but he felt he played better in a shootout loss to Calgary on Jan. 24.

Devan Dubnyk let in four goals on 31 shots in Nashville's 5-4 shootout loss to Calgary Friday night.

It was Dubnyk's second start for the Predators and he could not earn his first victory yet. He has been struggling all season and it looks like Carter Hutton will be the number one goalie in Nashville until Pekka Rinne recovers from his injury.
