Justin Schultz D EDM 1 Day

Schultz scored his fifth goal of the season and recorded a game-high six shots on goal in Saturday's loss to the Blues.

It was just his second goal in 28 games and his second point in 12 games. While he averages 22:07 of ice time and plays on the top power-play season, Schultz has been too inconsistent this season to be trusted in shallow leagues. The potential is there, but Schultz might be hard-pressed to even reach 30 points this season.

Schultz left Friday's contest against the Wild with a facial injury.Schultz suffered the injury after getting hit in the face with a puck. At this point in time the severity of the injury, as well as whether or not Schultz will be able to return to Friday's contest, is unclear. The team should update his status in the coming days.

Schultz tallied a goal and assist in Monday's shootout win over the Sharks. He attempted five shots and went plus-3 over his 26:13 of ice time.

It marked one of the best games of the season for Schultz, who leads the Oilers' motley collection of defensemen with 21 points this season. The positive plus/minus on the evening improved his overall mark to minus-4 over his 50 games, a respectable output considering the Oilers own the NHL's second-worst record.

Schultz registered a power-play assist in his 24:08 of ice time Tuesday against the Blues.

After seeing his ice time fall below 20 minutes earlier in January, Schultz has been around 24 minutes the last two games, delivering assists on each occasion. It's clear that he offers the most fantasy upside of any Edmonton blueliner, but the 24-year-old remains mostly a disappointment since his strong debut as a rookie. He's on pace for just six goals and 34 points, which would represent the lowest per-game production of his career.

Schultz scored the Oilers' lone goal in Tuesday's humiliating 5-1 defeat to the Coyotes.

Despite the lopsided loss, Schultz avoided any damage to his plus/minus, which probably counts as a silver lining these days for the defenseman. While he possesses the most offensive ability of any of the Oilers' blueliners, Schultz's 14 points in 34 games hardly make him an elite fantasy option, particularly when his value remains dragged down by a minus-7 rating.

Schultz returned to the lineup for the Oilers on Friday, according to the Edmonton Journal.

Schultz has been struggling mightily for most of the season and was a healthy scratch Thursday versus Nashville. Schultz has never been the player most thought he could be since coming to Edmonton which could lead one to ask, is that the players fault, or the organizations?

Schultz will be a healthy scratch Thursday against the Predators. "Justin has struggled a little bit as of late and we felt it was best to hit the reset button," coach Dallas Eakins said.

Schultz has seen his ice time drop to 16:30 and 15:13 in each of the last two games due to poor performance on his own end, a far cry from the 22 minutes he's averaging for the season. His banishment to the press box is only expected to be a one-game appointment, but it's certainly not a promising sign for the third-year blueliner. Oscar Klefbom will enter the lineup in his place Thursday.

Schultz gathered a power-play assist in Thursday's loss to the Bruins, but finished the game with a minus-2 rating.

Schultz continues to pace the Oilers in defensemen scoring, but the plus/minus rating will always be a drag on his fantasy value. The 24-year-old is already down to a minus-5 rating through his first 13 games, bringing him all the way down to minus-44 over his 135 career NHL games.

Schultz scored his second goal of the season in Wednesday's 3-2 victory over the Capitals.

The 24-year-old has now found the twine in consecutive games, after managing only one point in his first five contests. Schultz is still prone to lapses on his own end -- he let the Caps' Alex Ovechkin glide by him easily in the third period for what was nearly the game-tying score -- but he's far and away the Oilers' top scoring threat from the blue line.

Schultz signed a one-year, $3.8 million deal with the Oilers on Friday, Ryan Rishaug of TSN reports.

The restricted free agent defenseman averaged 23:21 of ice time per game last season, registering 11 goals and 22 assists. His production has still been somewhat disappointing, though, as he hasn't quite shown the consistent offensive game that vaulted him to college stardom. Still, he's been a consistent contributor and should return in a similar role in 2014-15.
