Demers netted the game-winning power-play goal in his Stars debut Saturday.

The goal was the first of the season for Demers, who had been held to only three assists over 20 games with the Sharks before he was traded Friday. The Sharks dealt Demers and a future third-round draft pick to the Stars on Friday in exchange for Brenden Dillon, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Demers will help the Stars fill a need in adding a right-handed defenseman with some puck-moving ability to their ranks, which should only help the team's speedy forwards start to pick up their production. The 26-year-old, who was off to a slow start with the Sharks with only three points in 20 games, could also see some time on the power-play.

Jason Demers has signed a two-year, $6.8 million contract extension with the San Jose Sharks.

With that, the Sharks and Demers have successfully avoided arbitration ahead of their July 22 hearing date. He's coming off of a breakout season where he scored five goals and 34 points in 75 games. The fact that it's a two-year deal makes a lot of sense for San Jose as it will give Demers a chance to prove that he's capable of continuing to perform at that level before they potentially make a long-term commitment.
