Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli is pleased with the trajectory of the development of 20-year-old Dougie Hamilton, who has been paired mostly with superstar defenseman Zdeno Chara on defense and has played against top lines.

Hamilton had 7-18-25 totals and was plus-22 in 64 games in the regular season. "You hear me talk a lot, you hear (coach Claude Julien) talk a lot about defending, and defending is so important in the playoffs. I think that's an area that Dougie's really improved, and he will continue to improve," said Chiarelli. "He's just getting stronger. . ., he's getting more confident with his body and with his strength and his play with the puck on the offensive side of the blue line has been terrific. His little in-tight plays starting the break-out. . .they've been good and they've been getting better. He can skate out of trouble. I saw him skate the other game . . . with the puck, it's the fastest I've seen him skate, so his skating's been improving. . .The biggest thing is his defending and his strength on the puck and it's gotten so much better. It still has to get better because I project him to be a top defenseman, but he's on the right track."

The Detroit Red Wings play a European style of hockey, according to Boston Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton.

"They've got a lot of speed, a lot of skill and puck possession," Hamilton said. "It's kind of a Euro-style of game, where they don't want to dump it in. When they do, they're fast and get on you. I think we just have to push the pace against them instead of letting them take it to us. And, obviously, be physical. We should be fine." The Bruins face Red Wings in Round 1 of the NHL playoffs, beginning Friday night.

Dougie Hamilton has played very well since getting back into the lineup from the press box.

After he was scratched for two games, he's posted a plus-7 rating and four assists in the six matches. "I think I've tried to be more physical and you're just focusing on doing your best so that you're in the lineup," said Hamilton, who recorded an assist in Saturday's win over Phoenix.

Dougie Hamilton was back in the lineup on Thursday after he was a healthy scratch for the team's previous two games.

Dougie Hamilton was a healthy scratch for a second straight game on Wednesday.

The Bruins dressed newcomer Andrej Meszaros again in his place. Coach Claude Julien doesn't plan to keep Hamilton in the press box for very long, so he could return shortly. However, when he does the Bruins will have a tough decision when it comes to who to take out.

Dougie Hamilton skated on the fourth pairing during Tuesday's practice.

He was a healthy scratch on Sunday but coach Claude Julien hasn't decided yet who will be in the press box for Wednesday's game at Montreal. "Dougie has played good hockey and he's been good for us, so Dougie is not going to be the guy that is going to be singled out here," Julien said. "Dougie is going to be back in our lineup, and it's just a matter of me making those tough decisions. ... But the good part is we've got a lot of games in a short span of time, so there's lots of room for everybody to get in there."

Dougie Hamilton was a healthy scratch in Sunday's game against Florida.

The Bruins chose to dress veteran defenseman Andrej Meszaros for his first game with the club instead. "No big reason," coach Claude Julien said before the game. "I said eventually we would see (Meszaros). I think Dougie Hamilton has played really good hockey for us. Offensively he continues to be good; he's struggled at times defensively. We're going to pull him back and continue to work with him. Certainly he's a guy we want in our lineup. This is a one-game situation. This is an opportunity to see Meszaros. I'll make a decision after this game for the next." Meszaros had a strong game so Julien will probably be forced to make lineup adjustments.

Dougie Hamilton scored a goal in Boston's 4-0 victory on Saturday.

Hamilton found the back of the net in back-to-back games, giving him six goals and 13 points in 38 contests in 2013-14. It's worth noting that Zdeno Chara will miss the final two games before the break and Hamilton's responsibilities should consequently go up over that period.
