Saad scored in the first period on Friday against the Caps -- his first goal in nine games in the Blackhawks' 3-2 loss.

This is a big chance for Saad as he is being targeted by the Hawks to pick up some of the scoring slack with Patrick Sharp out of the lineup with a knee injury for the next few weeks. If he plays like he did Friday night for the rest of the season, he should easily top last season's 19 goals and 28 assists in 78 games. He has two goals and seven assists in the first 13 games so far in the 2014-15 season. Against Sunday night's opponent, San Jose, he has some success with three goals and two assists in six games.

Saad opened the scoring Tuesday against the Flyers with his first goal of the year, then added an assist on Chicago's third goal in a 2:06 span.

While Saad is off to a point-per-game start this year with five in five, all of his points have come in two games while he's gone scoreless in the other three. He's highly talented, but he'll need to show more consistency to maintain anything resembling this scoring rate.

Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad will be a restricted free agent after next season and is due for a huge raise to the $764,167 he's making on his entry-level contract.

Saad said there have been no talks about an extension yet. ''If it happens, great,'' he said. ''It's always nice to have that security and feel comfortable that you've re-signed. But I'm more focused on having a good year and contributing to the team. All that stuff will take care of itself.'' General manager Stan Bowman said that ''it's been a busy time for us'' and that Saad's situation will be addressed eventually.
