Smith was elevated to a top-line role for the Preds' two weekend contests while James Neal was out with a lower-body injury, notching a point in each match. Neal's ailment isn't believed to be a long-term concern at this point, but Smith may be worth a pickup on speculation alone. He had shown some signs of heating up prior to his top-line promotion, tallying four goals an assist in his preceding six games.

After going five straight games without a point, Smith now has four in his last two contests. Through 32 games he now has 10 goals and nine assists, and while the 25-year-old likely won't match last season's 52-point effort, he could still surpass the 40-point mark by the end of the year.

Smith cracked the scoresheet for the first time in six games Saturday, notching a goal and an assist in the Preds' 6-5 OT win over the Wild. He also fired seven shots on goal and saw 18:44 in ice time.

With James Neal out with an undisclosed illness, Smith was promoted to the top line alongside Mike Ribeiro and Filip Forsberg, and the move paid instant dividends for coach Peter Laviolette. Enjoy the scoring surge while it lasts, however once Neal is ready to return, Smith will no doubt be shifted back to his usual second-line status. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain his productivity once that happens.

Smith gathered a goal and an assist in Tuesday's shootout win over the Kings, finishing plus-1 with four shots on goal and two takeaways.

Smith's been rolling along nicely of late, with two goals, three helpers, a plus-5 rating, six PIM and 21 shots on goal over the last five games. He's still a decent bit short of last season's scoring pace, but things are definitely coming along.

Although he is skating on the third line, Smith still logged 15:30 of ice time Saturday, picking up his sixth goal of the season. Smith has produced a decent nine points in 17 games this season, putting him on pace to hit the 25-goal mark for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old has built off the success of his career 52-point season in 2013-14 and is emerging as a reliable secondary scorer.

Smith had the secondary helpers on both Nashville goals, so it's not the most impressive showing of all time, but it still gives him three points and a plus-3 rating through three games this year. Coming off a breakout 52-point season, Smith is going to be a big part of whatever the Preds can do on offense. He skated 17:23 on Tuesday.

Smith's marker under two minutes into the third period keyed the Preds' comeback victory, as Shea Weber and Eric Nystrom would follow in the next 10 minutes with goals of their own. The 25-year-old saw only 13:45 of ice time in the contest, and a relatively low minutes total could be a legitimate concern toward his chances of surpassing last season's 52-point production.

Smith scored his second goal of the preseason during a 2-1 split-squad win over the Panthers on Saturday.

Smith appears to be picking up where he left off after closing out the 2013-14 season on a high note with eight points in his last four games. So far in the preseason, Smith has looked awfully good skating with Derek Roy and Colin Wilson, a combination that projects as the Preds' second line once the regular season begins. Smith makes for a good mid- to late-round selection in most fantasy formats.

Expectations are high in the coming season for forward Craig Smith of the Nashville Predators.

Smith is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and scouts throughout the league have expected high numbers from him in the past couple of years. Last season, he was solid with 24 goals for the Preds and 52 points in 79 games. In the coming season, though, his statistics could be sky-high. The reason? New Nashville coach Peter Laviolette, who is promising to implement a fast-paced, wide-open offensive system. Smith can take advantage and he's excited about Laviolette's arrival in Nashville. "He's a pretty high-octane, high-powered offensive coach," Smith said. "He wants to outscore the other team versus trying to win 1-0, so I like that type of run-and-gun style. . ."

Craig Smith registered an assist in the U.S.'s 6-1 win over Belarus at the IIHF World Hockey Championships.

Smith had a very solid 2013-2014 campaign with 24 goals and 52 points in 79 games. We think he is a player on the upswing. Don't forget about him on draft day.
