Ryane Clowe is suffering from "general soreness" after Wednesday's practice, so he didn't skate on Thursday.

"Pretty natural for the first day back," coach Pete DeBoer said. "Nothing I'm worried about. Just not going to take any chances with things. You always deal with these things coming back off a break like we had." We'll leave Clowe as active for now.

New Jersey has just 28 games left on its schedule and while they're still very much in the race for a playoff spot, they're stuck in a pack of six teams gunning for one Wild Card spot. The Devils need to get hot to break out of that logjam, but lately they've been merely okay. On Tuesday they weren't even that as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to St. Louis.

Clowe picked up a goal and an assist. He's only played 18 games this season due to a concussion, but that has made him overlooked thus far, as he's been very valuable when in the lineup. He has points in six of his last seven games. The rugged winger has recorded two goals, 11 points and 17 penalty minutes on the season and will be a nice source of points and penalty minutes the rest of the way. Jaromir Jagr potted the other goal. Michael Ryder, Eric Gelinas and Andy Greene had the assists.

Clowe had a rough start to the season with the Devils, tallying just one assist in six games before suffering a concussion on Oct. 13. He returned to the lineup on Dec. 27, and has since been in two fights and recorded seven points in 11 games. He is available in 90% of Yahoo leagues.

Clowe has suited up for 15 games this season so it took a little longer for him to find the back of the net than his fantasy owners had hoped. Adam Henrique also added a power play tally for New Jersey in the loss.

Ryane Clowe got into a fight with the New York Islanders' Matt Carkner in just his second game after returning from a concussion.

Clowe has dealt with two concussions in less than a year, but clearly that didn't deter him from dropping his gloves. "A lot of my fights are not premeditated," Clowe said. "I just finished my hit on the forecheck and [Carkner] didn't like it, I guess. . He was trying to stand up for a teammate. The hit was clean and the ref told me the hit was clean." Clowe has an assist and 10 penalty minutes in eight games this season.

Devils forward Ryane Clowe played his first game Friday night since suffering a concussion Oct. 13 and didn't score any points.

But he had four hits and a blocked shot in the Devils' 2-1 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. "I felt good," Clowe said. "Obviously the first couple of shifts were on adrenalin and excitement. After the first shift I didn't know if my legs were going to seize up. I was sitting on the bench. Lucky I didn't get out there for another 10 minutes, so I had time to recover. In the first period I felt like I missed 30 games, but in the second I felt really good. I started to have a little bit of jump." Coach Pete DeBoer on Clowe: "I thought he was one of our best forwards. I thought he gave us some good energy and he was physical. He did a great job." Clowe said he isn't sure if he'll play against the Islanders tonight because of the back-to-back games.
