Brett Connolly RW TB 9 Hrs

Connolly suffered a lower-body injury in Friday's game against the Jets and is considered week-to-week, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.

The 22-year-old Connolly seemed to be on the cusp of a breakthrough in his first eight games of the season, notching two goals while seeing time on the team's second line. However, it looks like the injury will present an unfortunate roadblock for him to build on those early successes, as Connolly figures to miss the next several games. Michael Blunden and Jonathan Marchessault were recalled from AHL Syracuse on Saturday to provide the Bolts with some extra forward options while Connolly remains unavailable.

Connolly potted his second goal of the season in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Oilers.

It was nice to see the 2010 sixth overall pick find twine for the second time in five games, but he really hadn't done much else in between (no points, one shot, plus-1 in three contests). Tampa is loaded with bright young talent, anchored by superstar Steven Stamkos, veteran Valteri Filppula and sophomores Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson, so Connolly will need to find the offensive consistency that has eluded him in three NHL seasons if he hopes to earn a more prominent role in coach Jon Cooper's lineup.

Connolly scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's shootout loss to Ottawa.

He only saw 8:37 of ice time, so it's clear the Bolts aren't entirely sold on him being a top-nine guy just yet. We're hoping to see more of a spark soon -- this guy has real potential if he can amp things up to the NHL level.

Connolly picked up his first preseason point Tuesday, but head coach Jon Cooper was more impressed with his overall game. "There are just so many little things that are getting better about his game," Cooper told the Tampa Tribune. "I've been really pleased with him and he's a better player today than he was a year ago today."

He's doing the little things right and should break camp with a top-nine role. Some guys just develop at different paces and Connolly appears to be that guy who takes a bit longer. He's an offensive talent, so stash him away in deep formats -- you'll be glad you did.

The Lightning are counting on Connolly to not only make the team this season, but to also battle for top-nine minutes, reports the Tampa Bay Times. "Obviously it's a big year," Connolly said. "I'm excited. I put the work in this summer. I'm still confident in my game, and I'm really excited to prove to a lot of people that I do belong here."

Connolly needs to earn a job, but the reality is that he must pass waivers in order to be sent down. So the Bolts will do whatever it takes to keep him. He has been working out with Steven Stamkos and former NHLer Gary Roberts in Toronto all summer. And he's improved his defensive game to the point where he's no longer just a one-dimensional sniper. There's fantasy value in him if he earns a top-nine gig. Watch camp carefully.

Brett Connolly has agreed to a one-year, two-way deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Connolly excelled in the minors last season with 21 goals and 57 points in 66 games. He only logged 11 contests with Tampa Bay though and averaged 12:01 minutes in those games. He's had a hard time living up to the strong start he had to his career, but he's still young and has plenty of upside. This deal offers him a chance to prove that and potentially get a more lucrative contract next summer.

Brett Connolly was bumped to the fourth line for Thursday's loss to San Jose.

The Lightning tried him out at center after Steve Stamkos was injured, but coach Jon Cooper did some line juggling that didn't benefit Connolly. His ice time dropped to 8:53 in the contest. He has just one goal in 11 games this campaign.

Brett Connolly was moved to center in Tuesday's 2-1 shootout win over Montreal.

He skated between Alex Killorn and Martin St. Louis on Tampa Bay's top line, with Steve Stamkos sidelined indefinitely by a broken tibia. Connolly logged 12:18 of ice time versus the Canadiens and he recorded two shots. He has only one goal in seven NHL games this year.

Coach Jon Cooper was happy to see Brett Connolly rewarded with the game-winning goal in Saturday's 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues.

"He's got speed, he's got skill and he can put the puck in the net, so for him to get the game winner ... And I don't know what will happen in the future here, but I don't think that is the last goal Brett Connolly is going to score in the near future," Tampa Bay's bench boss said. "Sometimes you just have to get the monkey off your back. And he did it and usually when that happens, they usually start to come in bunches." Connolly hadn't scored in six AHL games and his previous two NHL appearances this year prior to Saturday's marker.
