Oliver Ekman-Larsson D PHO 10 Days

Ekman-Larsson scored the overtime-winning goal on a power play in Saturday's win over the Kings.

It was a thing of beauty from Ekman-Larsson, who walked in from the point and put a perfectly placed wrist shot past Jonathan Quick. Ekman-Larsson, who finished with a game-high eigh shots on goal, has now recorded a point in each of the Coyotes two games thus far. After scoring 15 goals and 44 points as a 22-year-old last season, the sky is the limit for this elite defenseman.

Ekman-Larsson has been playing on a defensive pairing with Keith Yandle the last few days of training camp, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.

Though a left-handed shooter, Ekman-Larsson has been playing on the right side of the pairing as the Coyotes entertain the idea of uniting their top minute men. Because both Ekman-Larsson and Yandle profile as offensive-leaning defenseman, arranging the two together could result in some hairiness on the back end, but the duo might offset that with the boost they'd give to the team's attack. Moreover, pairing up the duo would allow them to sync up on the power-play, bolstering that unit even further. The arrangement strictly remains in trial mode right now, but if it ends up materializing during the regular season, Ekman-Larsson could notice a surge in his scoring opportunities.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson was benched for the entirety of Sweden's 2-1 semifinal win over Finland on Friday.

It's really hard to fathom why Swedish coach Per Marts has such a distaste for the young, talented defenseman. Marts also left Ekman-Larsson off of his 2009 World Juniors team. Ekman-Larsson is Phoenix's go-to blueliner, averaging 25:41 of ice time per game with 29 points in 56 games. But in the Olympics, he's averaged just over 10 minutes per game in the Olympics. Niklas Hjalmarsson, Johnny Oduya, Niklas Kronwall, Erik Karlsson and even Jonathan Ericsson are above Ekman-Larsson in the depth chart, though the 22 year-old has managed to tally three points in his limited ice time in Sochi.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is adding a new element to his game: chippiness.

The ultra-talented defenseman is only 22 and has multiple Norris Trophies in his future if he is not hurt by an Eastern bias. He played amazingly well against the Penguins on Saturday, shutting down Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Opponents have tried to be more aggressive with Ekman-Larsson but he is not backing down. "I think maybe they're frustrated by him because he's so good," coach Dave Tippett said. "And it's not just with the puck. He defends very well. When you're a guy trying to have success against a guy and it's not happening, it's a little frustrating." OEL has eight goals and 29 points this season and is averaging 25:36 minutes of ice time per game.
