Brett Sutter will replace Carter on the fourth line beginning Tuesday against the Jets, and could retain that role if he plays well right away. Carter has provided three goals and 10 assists over 48 games this season.

The placement on IR ensures Carter will miss at least the next four games, but it wouldn't be a surprise if his absence stretches beyond that.

After missing the Wild's previous three games, Carter was cleared to return after practicing Friday. He'll be reinserted on the fourth line for Saturday's game against the Predators.

Carter looks like he's just about ready to return from the upper-body injury that has kept him out of action for the last three games. Because he's missed beyond the seven-day minimum required for his IR stint, Carter could be activated in advance of Saturday's game against the Predators if coach Mike Yeo believes his health is sufficient. If that's the case, Carter would likely be plugged in on the fourth line.

It doesn't look as though a long-term absence is in the picture for Carter, but since he was placed on IR over the weekend with a retroactive date of Dec. 11, he'll still have to miss the Wild's next two games. He could be ready to go as soon as he's eligible for activation Saturday against Nashville.

Since the Wild held an optional skate Saturday, it wasn't known that Carter was nursing an injury until coach Mike Yeo met with the press about two hours prior to the game against the Coyotes. It appears Carter is being considered day-to-day at this time, with Stu Bickel entering the lineup Saturday in his stead.

Considering Carter's scored those two goals on two shots in fourth-line ice time, he's not likely to continue producing offensively. But he does have eight points in 14 games this year and could be headed for a career-best campaign.
