Daniel Briere announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday, according to the Canadian Press. Briere had 307 goals and 389 assists in his 17-year NHL career split between the Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche and Montreal Canadiens.

Briere (foot) will play Thursday against the Jets, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports. The Avalanche appeared to be ruling Briere out for the remainder of the season due to his slow progress in his recovery from a foot injury, but the veteran forward was able to get in a strong skate Thursday morning and talked his way into the lineup thereafter. While Briere's return won't cause many ripples in the fantasy realm due to his poor numbers this season (eight goals, 12 points in 55 games), it's a welcome development for the Avalanche who only have 11 other healthy forward on the roster after Dennis Everberg suffered a season-ending shoulder injury earlier this week. The Avs' final two regular-season games could represent the last of Briere's career, as the 37-year-old will be a free agent this summer and isn't expected to command much interest.

Briere (foot) appears unlikely to return over the Avs' final three games of the season, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports. Briere hurt his foot while blocking a shot in a March 23 game and hasn't been skating with the team. With the season drawing to a close Saturday, it looks like Briere will run out of time to demonstrate to the coaching staff that he's fully healthy, potentially ending his career on a somber note. Briere will turn 38 in October, and after an unproductive season in which he tallied only 12 points in 55 games, the winger may elect to hang up his skates for good.

Briere (foot) will not join the Avalanche for their three-game California trip that begins Wednesday in San Jose. Briere has already missed the Avs' last four contests after taking a shot off his foot in a March 23 tilt against the Flames. His activity has been limited since then, and the team apparently wasn't optimistic of his chances at being back to full health by the time the road trip concludes. The Avalanche will only have three games remaining on its regular-season schedule after the road trip, and with Briere not necessarily a lineup regular before the injury, it wouldn't be surprised if he was shut down for good.

X-rays on the foot injury Briere suffered earlier this week came back negative, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports. After taking a shot off his foot in Monday's game against the Flames, Briere missed the final two contests of the Avs' road trip, instead opting to return to Denver early. It's not yet clear if he'll be available for Saturday's home game versus the Sabres.

Briere (foot) will not play Wednesday against the Oilers. Briere originally sustained the injury in Monday's loss to the Flames. Although he was able to stay in that contest, look for the winger to be a game time call when the Avs take on the Canucks on Thursday.

Briere missed Tuesday's practice with a suspected foot injury, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports. Briere took a hard shot to the foot in Monday's loss to the Flames, and while it didn't force him out of the game, he wasn't apparently still ailing afterwards. He should be viewed as questionable for Wednesday's tilt in Edmonton.

Briere picked up an assist in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Coyotes. Prior to Thursday, the 37-year-old hadn't scored a point since Jan. 8, a span of 18 games. Briere has been more of a lineup regular for the Avalanche since Nathan MacKinnon succumbed to a season-ending injury, but his fantasy intrigue isn't on the upswing because of it. Briere has produced only 12 points on the season and probably won't raise his production while he remains locked into a fourth-line role.

Briere will miss his third straight game Thursday against the Kings. With the Avalanche owning a two-game winning streak since Briere became a healthy scratch, coach Patrick Roy will stick the same lineup. The 37-year-old Briere is clearly in the twilight of his career at this point, as he's only produced eight goals and 11 points in 47 games this season.

Briere found twine Friday, notching his seventh goal of the season in a 2-1 shootout win over the Oilers. As predicted, the aging Briere's offense has continued to decline in 2014-15, as he's now up to just nine points in 31 contests. However, he skated with offensive weapons Matt Duchene and captain Gabriel Landeskog on the top line in this one, so as long as he's receiving this assignment, he's certainly worth a look in deeper formats, even if the struggles of Colorado's top forwards have been well documented.
