Henrik Zetterberg LW DET 12 Days

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says he has received positive health reports on several players, including star forward Henrik Zetterberg.

"The biggest thing is health," Holland said. "If we can get to training camp (Sept. 19) and get (Zetterberg and others) on the ice, we're optimistic we [have] the potential to be a decent hockey club." Zetterberg missed 37 regular-season games last season. He had in-season surgery on a herniated disk that later caused problems with his foot. The Wings' other star, Pavel Datsyuk, also missed 37 games with a left-knee injury and offseason surgery was considered. But Holland says Datsyuk also is progressing well.

Henrik Zetterberg developed a foot issue from his surgery for a herniated disc.

"My back was fine but I had some weakness in my foot," he said. "It will come back." He'll use the summer to get himself back to full strength.

Henrik Zetterberg won't play for Sweden at the IIHF World Hockey Championships next week.

He said his back feels fine but he wants more time to rest and rehab it during the off-season. Zetterberg had surgery for a herniated disc in February and returned for Detroit's last two playoff games versus Boston.

Henrik Zetterberg is getting frustrated by Detroit's early playoff exits.

"We've been saying it now for three years - it looks good for the future, it looks good for the future, it looks good for the future," Zetterberg said after Detroit was defeated in the first round by Boston in five games. "Obviously we have good young guys in our system that really showed they can play. But we've seen that before, too. We kept the playoff streak going, but it's getting tiring to not go deeper." Zetterberg was itching to play more after returning from a back injury to play in the team's last two playoff contests. The Red Wings haven't advanced past the second round for the past five seasons.

Henrik Zetterberg recorded his first goal in Saturday afternoon's loss to Boston since Feb. 12 when he scored for Sweden in the Winter Olympics.

He came back from back surgery to make his playoff debut in Game 4, but made an impact on the scoresheet in Game 5 with a goal and an assist. However, it wasn't enough, as the Red Wings got eliminated from the postseason in five contests by the Bruins. Pavel Datsyuk also had a goal and a helper in Saturday's 4-2 loss.

Despite not practising Friday, Henrik Zetterberg will be in the Detroit lineup Saturday afternoon for Game 5 against Boston.

After missing much of the season, Zetterberg returned to action in Game 4 and Wings' coach Mike Babcock did not want to tax his star forward with a practice the day after his return. Zetterberg indicated that he came out of Thursday's game just fine. "Feeling good," said Zetterberg. "It was fun to be out there playing a game finally. Back-wise, I felt good today."

Henrik Zetterberg logged 19:34 of ice time in his return to lineup on Thursday.

He cut his participation in the Winter Olympics short because of herniated disc, which required surgery. "I felt good in the first, and halfway through the second," said Zetterberg. "And then I started to have really short shifts. But that's the way it is. I had this first game, and hopefully it'll just get better and better." The Red Wings are down 3-1 in the series, so Zetterberg may not have much time to get himself back up to speed.

Henrik Zetterberg is on the lineup sheet for the Red Wings for Thursday's contest.

His status for Game 4 won't be confirmed until after the warmup, but it's looking probable that he'll play. Zetterberg skated with Pavel Datsyuk and Justin Abdelkader during the team's morning session.

Updating a recent post, it sounds like Henrik Zetterberg will be a game-time decision for Thursday night.

Coach Mike Babcock said he was "hopeful" that Zetterberg would return for Game 4, but he won't know the status of his captain until after the pregame warmup. Zetterberg is slated to have a doctor's appointment after the morning skate.
