Dennis Wideman logged 38:05 minutes of ice time in Calgary's 3-2 shootout loss on Saturday.

That's what happens when you engage in a line brawl just two seconds into the contest. The officials, in an effort to prevent the game from devolving further, booted four Flames players immediately following the massive melee. That force the remaining players to be leaned on extensively and Wideman was one example of that. Of course, Calgary never needs an excuse to lean on the veteran defenseman, as they already ask him to log 24:59 minutes during an average game.

Dennis Wideman (broken hand) will return on Friday.

Wideman has been out since Nov. 27. Before the injury, he was averaging 26:14 minutes per contest, so naturally his absence left the Flames with a huge void to fill. He also chips in offensively and that's crucial for Calgary right now as they have scored just one goal in their past three games.

Wideman has 12 points this season and is a good two-three blueliner in most deeper leagues. His plus/minus will take a hit in Calgary as they are likely a bottom three NHL team this season but he will perform well on the power play and should get 45-50 points if he can stay healthy.

Dennis Wideman ranks second in the NHL with an average of 27:46 minutes per game.

Wideman has a goal and three points in five games this season. "He's been definitely one of our best players," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said. "His experience, also his presence in the locker room, here's a guy that knows the game very well. He's taking care of his partners. He's taking care of the kids on the team. He's an offensive defensemen, but I think what we're forgetting to talk about is the way he's really committed to the game and three zones." He won't maintain his current minutes per game pace, but he will continue to log plenty of ice time.
