Vermette netted a goal and an assist -- both on the power play -- in Saturday's overtime win over Los Angeles.

Vermette, who scored 24 goals last season, will likely have another productive season in 2014-15 as Arizona's first-line center. While he likely won't recreate the success of his 65-point season with Columbus five years ago, there is no reason Vermette can't hit 50 points this season.

Vermette (undisclosed) will serve as the Coyotes' top-line center in Thursday's opener against the Jets, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.

Vermette was able to shake off a nagging injury late in training camp in time for the start of his 13th NHL season. While not a prolific scorer relative to most of the league's top centers, Vermette's two-way contributions make him an important cog in Arizona's machine.

Vermette could sit out of Friday's preseason game while he tends to an undisclosed nagging injury, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.

The injury is considered minor and shouldn't put Vermette's chances of suiting up for the regular-season opener in peril. The 32-year-old will return to Arizona this season to center Mikkel Boedker and Shane Doan on the top line, but he won't provide the point production of some of the league's elite middle men. He does carry more value in specialty formats, however, where his prowess on the faceoff may be better rewarded.

The Arizona Coyotes would like to ink Antoine Vermette to an extension.

The value of top-six centers has gone up though and Vermette would be in for a big payday if he simply becomes an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2015. The Coyotes might still be able to keep him, but he'll probably demand a substantial upgrade over his current five-year, $18.75 million deal.

Antoine Vermette scored a team high 24 goals in 2013-14.

Vermette was originally slotted to be the third line center for the Coyotes at the start of the season but his scoring and ability at the face off dot changed all of that. "I'm pleased with the way I played," Vermette said. "I think if you look at the statistics, sometimes it doesn't show. It shows a little bit but not as much as you might think. I try to grow my game, different areas of the game. It was a successful year for me, but it's a bad taste. You want to do it and win and ultimately, you want to be successful as a team." Vermette also led all forwards playing an average of 19:21 minutes per game.
