Tootoo signed a one-year, $550,000 contract with the Devils on Tuesday, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

The hard-nosed winger beat out a slew of forward candidates in camp to claim a spot on the Devils' fourth line. He'll be a source of hits and penalty minutes when he's in the lineup, but it might not be long before he becomes a regular healthy scratch.

Tootoo will sign with the Devils on Tuesday, Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger reports.

Tootoo joined the the Devils on a tryout basis in mid-September, and he apparently showed enough to earn a spot on the Devils' Opening Night roster. He figures to open the season either as a fourth-line winger or a reserve winger.

Tootoo will attend the New Jersey Devils' training camp on a professional tryout basis, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

While the odds of Tootoo landing a spot on an NHL roster are slim, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello apparently likes what he sees in him. "He's a different dimension type of player," Lamoriello said of Tootoo. "He's exciting, he bangs and hits. It's intriguing. He played against us and he got my attention when he played for Nashville." Even if he does manage to win himself a job this season, it will likely be as a third- or fourth-line agitator which does not warrant much attention in most fantasy formats. Tootoo racked up just eight points in 53 games playing for Detroit over the past two seasons.

Tootoo is unlikely to re-sign with the Predators, Joshua Cooper of The Tennessean reports.

Tootoo, who became an unrestricted free agent in June when the Red Wings bought out his contract, is likely not a good fit to re-join the Preds, as the team has already made several free-agent pickups this summer to bolster depth. Tootoo recorded just a single assist in 11 games for Detroit last season, and spent most of his time in the AHL. His best days as an NHL forward - and viable fantasy option - are likely behind him at this point.

The Winnipeg Jets could be a potential landing spot for Jordin Tootoo.

The Churchill, Manitoba product was placed on waivers by the Red Wings on Wednesday with the intention of buying out the remainder of his contract. Winnipeg may have several openings in their bottom-six group with Olli Jokinen, Devin Setoguchi and Chris Thorburn eligible for unrestricted free agency as well as Matt Halischuk, Michael Frolik and James Wright set to be restricted free agents.

The Detroit Red Wings have placed Jordin Tootoo on waivers.

The plan is to buy out the remainder of Tootoo's contract if he clears waivers. Because the Red Wings still have an available compliance buyout, Detroit would save $1.9 million in cap space for the 2014-15 campaign.

"Toots has done everything we could have asked of him in the AHL," GM Ken Holland said. "I don't know if we'll buy him out, but we don't want Toots in the American League.
