Toews picked up a power-play assist and a shorthanded helper in Saturday's win over the Sabres.

The Hawks' top line consisting of of Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa and Toews is off to a great start in 2014-15, combining for four points on Saturday. Toews, who recorded 68 points in 76 games last season, is well on his way to another great year in Chicago. Keep rolling him.

Toews started out where he left off by scoring the game-winning goal, 2-1, in Tuesday's pre-season opener against Detroit.

Toews tallied 28 goals and 40 assists last season. If all goes well, he could meet or surpass his best season, 2010-11, where he collected 32 goals and 44 assists. Ironically, Kane joined Toews in scoring the two goals against the Red Wings. Both signed eight-year extensions during the summer with price tags of $10.5 million a year.

Jonathan Toews has agreed to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension.

Patrick Kane signed an identical contract. Kane and Toews new cap hits of $10.5 million annually don't take effect until the 2015-16 campaign, but currently they're projected to be the two highest in the league. Toews fantasy value in standard leagues will always be a step below his actual worth as his offensive contributions are only a portion of what he brings to the table. He's a superb two-way center and a great team leader.

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have discussed signing extensions together on July 1 like they did when they agreed to identical five-year, $31.5 million contracts during the 2009-10 campaign.

"We're in discussions right now, but as far as I know nothing is concrete," Toews said. "We'll see where it continues to go. Stan probably has a lot on his docket as the manager of our team so he's trying to get things done. Kaner and I will take it slow and make the right decision." Toews and Kane have one season left on their respective deals, but all signs point to them signing long-term extensions in short order with the Blackhawks.

Chicago is hoping that Jonathan Toews will re-sign on July 1, which is the earliest possible date he can sign an extension.

Although there's little doubt Toews will sign, the timing matters because Chicago wants to know how much cap space it will have moving forward. How much Toews and Patrick Kane, who they would also like to ink on July 1, end up demanding will influence the rest of their offseason plans.

Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman's highest priority this offseason will be re-signing Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

Toews and Kane's contracts run through 2014-15, but Bowman would understandably rather avoid a scenario where questions about their future persist into the season. "There's no doubting the importance of those two players. The direction this franchise has taken has really been in tandem with those two players," Bowman said. "When Patrick and Jonathan came on to the scene, it really breathed life into our franchise and into our team. They've played a huge part in this." Ultimately, they should get both players signed. The bigger question is at what price and how much the raise Kane and Toews will get will impact their ability to build around them.

As good as this campaign was for the Blackhawks, Jonathan Toews expects better in 2014-15.

"People forget pretty quick about the team that came up short. We never want to be that team. You can learn something from it but right now we're not going to accept that or think about that," Toews said. "It's tough. You never want to lose. When you get the chance to win a Cup and then win another one, you see how great it feels and how amazing it is to be a part of a group like that that gives everything to get the result you want, especially when the city of Chicago rallies around you. To come up short, it's not fun, especially knowing what we're missing out on." Before Chicago has a chance to compete for the Stanley Cup again, the Blackhawks will likely begin their contract negotiations with Toews. His current deal won't expire until the summer of 2015, but Chicago would probably prefer to have the matter settled before the 2014-15 campaign even begins. Toews is in line for a big payday, but how much of a hometown discount he's willing to give Chicago will ha

The Chicago Blackhawks can start negotiating long-term contracts for potential unrestricted free agents Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on July 1.

Both players have one year left on their respective deals. Chicago GM Stan Bowman expects to get his cornerstone forwards locked up and then the Blackhawks have the depth in their system to be contenders for a long time. "Top to bottom, we've got a lot of talent. I think we've got more character than anything," said Toews. "I could go on and on about that all day. Tough way to go down. It just goes to show how tough it is to win a Stanley Cup, let alone one time, but twice and twice in a row. It's pretty amazing to think what this team has accomplished and again, there's no satisfaction at all for one minute. I think that's the only reason we came this far."

Jonathan Toews scored his ninth goal of the playoffs in Sunday's 5-4 overtime loss to Los Angeles.

He gave the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead before the midway mark of the first period, but the Kings displayed their resiliency again and battled back to win the contest. "It's hard to admit to ourselves this season is over," Toews said shortly after Chicago was eliminated in the Western Conference Final. "It's not a good feeling especially given the circumstances, (with) how hard we fought (and) how badly we wanted to win this year." The Blackhawks captain ended the postseason with a five-game point streak (three goals, three assists). He registered 17 points in 19 matches.

It looks like the Chicago Blackhawks won't shake up their top line ahead of Game 5.

That means Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are likely to stay together. The line will be rounded out by Bryan Bickell. The trio wasn't anything special in Game 4, but obviously Kane and Toews have the potential to dominate when they're playing together. Chicago will need a strong performance out of them in Game 5 as they look to avoid elimination.
