Paul Stastny wants to test the free agent market, according to Avalanche executive vice president Joe Sakic.

That doesn't necessarily mean that Stastny's tenure with Colorado is done. In fact, it looks like Stastny is willing to give the Avalanche the opportunity to match another team's offer if he's close to signing elsewhere. That being said, the Avalanche seem to have a specific cap hit in mind for Stastny and so far it doesn't look like the team is willing to get into a bidding war to keep him.

Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic isn't sure if the team will be able to sign Paul Stastny before July 1.

Both sides will continue to talk leading into free agency, though. "We'll meet with the Avs this week," said Stastny's agent Matt Keator on Monday. "Had some good talks, and we will see where it goes." The 28-year-old center would probably find it much easier to get the money he wants in free agency, but he has expressed an interest in staying in Colorado.

Agent Matt Keator said that Paul Stastny's preference is to re-sign with the Avalanche.

Colorado's executive vice president Joe Sakic wants the same thing, but cautioned that he won't overpay to make that happen. "We will keep talking with Joe throughout the process and give them every chance to retain Paul," Keator said. "We will meet next week and see where things go." Stastny scored 25 goals and 60 points in 81 games in 2013-14.

Paul Stastny and the Avalanche are expected to engage in serious contract talks next week.

"We're hopeful we can sign Stastny.....but if he chooses to go to (FA), that's his right," said Colorado's Executive Vice President of hockey operations Joe Sakic. Negotiations between the two sides looks like it could go down to the wire, which may end up in Stastny heading to another team via free agency on July 1.

Paul Stastny was reportedly offered a multi-year contract from Colorado a couple of weeks ago.

The two sides haven't spoken since then, but they expected to come together soon and it could come later this week. Stastny' agent, Matt Keator, reportedly wasn't looking to start contract negotiations with the Avalanche until this Friday anyway, according to a report from the Denver Post.

Paul Stastny's agent, Matt Keator, reportedly isn't looking to start up the contract negotiations with the Avalanche until June 20.

In other words, he'd like to push this process close to the start of the unrestricted free agent period to put pressure on the Avalanche. Colorado would ideally like to bring Stastny back, but the team's already deep up the middle so they might be able to spend that money more effectively elsewhere. He had 25 goals and 60 points in 71 contests in 2013-14.

Another week has passed with absolutely nothing going on between the Avalanche and the representatives for Paul Stastny.

Although there is a month to go before July 1st and Stastny officially becomes an unrestricted free agent, this is not a good sign. It is looking more and more as if the talented pivot will test the free agent market.

Paul Stastny's agent, Matt Keator, told the Denver Post that "nothing is imminent" regarding a new deal with the Avalanche.

"I talked to Keator, and he said nothing is 'imminent' yet on this signing," said Dater on his Hockey Talk podcast. "I think the Avalanche are interested in re-signing him, but I think it's really touchy right now." He registered 25 goals and 60 points in 71 games in the last season of his five-year, $33 million contract. Stastny can be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Adrian Dater of the Denver Post is reporting that the representatives of Paul Stastny will meet with the Colorado Avalanche in the near future.

The two sides have not met since the NHL trade deadline in March as Stastny's side decided to hold all talks off until the off-season. The unrestricted free agent to be had 10 points in seven playoff games after a 60 point regular season so his services will be highly sought after should he decide to test the market. Stay tuned.

Paul Stastny increased his market value with a strong season and playoff.

The unrestricted free agent scored five goals and registered 10 points in the seven-game series against the Wild and scored 25 goals and registered 60 points in the regular season. Those numbers will certainly catch the attention of a number of general managers looking to upgrade their forward corps. However, Stastny may be willing to give the Avs a hometown discount to stay in Denver. Stay tuned. These negotiations should be interesting.
