Viktor Stalberg LW NAS 6 Days

Stalberg will be out two-to-four weeks with a lower-body injury.

Stalberg was set to enter 2014-15 in search of redemption after a dismal first season in Nashville, and it looks as though he's already gotten off to a troubling start. The injury timetable will more than likely keep him unavailable for the Preds' Oct. 9 opener against the Senators, and quite possibly, several more games beyond that. Though he's only two seasons removed from 40-point production, his shaky health and downward-trending point totals make it difficult to justify drafting him, even in deep formats.

Stalberg sustained a lower-body injury in Monday's practice, Eric Stromgren of The Tennessean reports.

It looked like the injury was related to Stalberg's right leg, as he was attempting to keep weight off the limb while he left the ice. The Predators will reevaluate his condition Tuesday, but he'll likely be held out for that night's preseason opener against the Lightning regardless of what the tests indicate. Stalberg was already entering the season with something to prove after he was a major disappointment in Year 1 in Nashville, when he totaled just 18 points in 70 games. The injury will probably hurt his chances of reclaiming a top-six role, and at this point, he's probably best left undrafted in all but the deepest of leagues.

Nashville Predators assistant coach Kevin McCarthy believes bench boss Peter Laviolette can get more out of Viktor Stalberg and Colin Wilson.

"Guys like Stalberg and Wilson can learn from that offensive system that we use," McCarthy said. "It's basically a lot of hard work and precision and doing things at the right time. You need to have skill for that, and they certainly have it." Stalberg accounted for just eight goals and 18 points in 70 games in his first season with the Predators.

Viktor Stalberg will play in Chicago for the first time since signing with the Nashville Predators.

"You miss Chicago, it's a great place and you miss the guys there," Stalberg said. "You move on and you have to do what you have to do. I had a great time here. There's no taking away that. It's a great time to leave with winning (the 2013 Stanley Cup), and having that memory with those guys and that group over the last couple of years." Stalberg joined Nashville hoping to play a bigger role than the one he had in Chicago. Instead, his playing time has actually gone down to an average of 13:05 minutes per game this season. He has just seven goals and 16 points in 55 contests.
